    "Showpreviewpanehandlers" missing from registry?

    Windows 10, 20H2 latest updates.

Detection of this issue arose during researching why my deleted RAW images (.rw2) within the Recycle Bin were showing up as program icons instead of image thumbnails (however, image thumbnails do show when opening File Explorer.) And, with the preview pane open in RB, when selecting an icon to show itself in the preview pane, the preview pane would say "no preview available." BTW, even though File Explorer shows image thumbnails, it too responds as the RB when trying to show a file in the Preview Pane? Lastly, when in RB, I can get the icons to show their image by dragging it into the Preview Pane area, but when releasing the left click, the image leaves the preview pane and reverts back to its program icon position,

So, as the Preview Pane in the RB wasn't working properly, I further researched this issue and found this site: FIX: Preview Pane Not Working In Windows 10. It lead me to changing "showpreviewhandlers" value to "1" if it was set to "0". However, when in the registry, "showpreviewhandlers" was not there! How can I get it back to where I think it should be?

And, if you know how to get thumbnail images, and not just program icons, into the Recycle Bin, that would be great. Thanks.

Hi, if it helps at all, this is what I have:

    Recycle bin:

    - what do you see?

And like you, the Preview Pane is ineffective for the Recycle Bin.

Thanks, but your registry path is different than what appears in the instructions. The instructions call for using "HKEY_CURRENT_USER... and not HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.... Furthermore, when I open the registry (regedit), HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE isn't there???

    - what do you see?

My RB shows program icons in stead of image thumbnails for my RAW images, but does show image thumbnails for .tif and .jpg
    images.

And like you, the Preview Pane is ineffective for the Recycle Bin.
But is that the way it should be?

EDIT: Found your registry reference....mine is exactly same as yours. But, showpreviewpanehandlers is not showing when I follow the instructions???

That's the only one that a complete search found.

    Never looked before.

Unsure what you mean. Showing where? I suppose you're referring to the registry keys and values.
I don't intend to give an opinion on 'the instructions', sorry.

Correct in your assumption, and I understand why you're not rendering an opinion about the instructions. But, do you think that the RB's Preview Pane should be effective in showing the images?
    Thanks.

do you think that the RB's Preview Pane should be effective in showing the images?
Ideally in the best of all possible worlds, yes.

In practice, both on this 21H1 and another on 1903, it doesn't.

In general, for each file type to be previewed, it must have a specific preview handler for that file type.
For example, MS Office provides a range of preview handlers for docx, xlsx etc etc that are not native to Windows.
Most other Office suites do not, and another approach is needed to provide previews of office type files.

Some pdf readers provide a preview handler.
I've used a small utility to list the available handlers on this: you can see one added by Sumatra:

There are ways to get Office preview handlers.

Here there is the universal setting that is needed, and then a rather useful fix for video file previews not showing: (this is winhelponline - don't ask me why this site shows it as it does)

If you want another approach to getting previews from the R. bin like this:

    - it's one of many features provided by Qttabbar (free).

You know what, Dalchina, I think I'm just going to leave things as they are, and live with it before I go crazy. Presently, my RB does show thumbnail images like the ones you're showing in your post above, except no image for RAWs (but do get an image when dragged to Preiew Pane), and no images in Preview Pane when just selecting an icon. I guess you are right, we don't live in a perfect world.

I just got this solution from another forum: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/qu...ot:overviewtab. Microsoft's store Quick Look is a free app that allows for relatively large thumbnail views of files (including icons from the Recycle Bin) by selecting the file and holding down the space bar. This is one neat app.

Just an FYI. It's also available as portable or installed for those who don't want the store app.

    Releases · QL-Win/QuickLook · GitHub

Also it works well to quickly preview video files.
