    transferring files

    Hello,
Here I am again. I installed win 10 from win 7 and it was the biggest mistake I have ever made with regard to my computer. I tried different things and it all looked very good, however, a lot of my files began not to open among other problems, as I am sure a lot of subscribers to this forum have noted. When the time came for me to say goodbye to 10, the month had already passed and I could NOT return to win 7. So now I am stuck with 10 on my desktop, however, I received a gift of a new HP notebook which comes, thankfully, with win 8.1 which I have previously used and am happy with it. Now comes the problem. I am trying to use Windows Easy Transfer to pass the files from my desktop to this new HP. I read that the best way was to backup the whole computer onto an external HD. I have the hard drive to do this but I have been unable to do a backup to my external HD in order to try to transfer from 10 to 8.1. Actually this is two problems. Hope someone can help me out with this.

It has not been a month yet, and you should have had recovery disc/ a backup. You are not stuck, use your original install media/key since you don't seem to have a backup and try again.

Can you not back up files to the external drive itself, without easy transfer

If it's only files (eg; My Music folder), not programs, that you want to transfer, simply drag and drop entire folders to ext drive and do same from ext to 8.1 device.
