    backspace key behavior changed

    Hello,
Two nights ago my computer updated and rebooted itself. Since then, my backspace key will only move one space at a time - no more holding the key down for multiple backspaces. How can I return it to its normal behavior?

Open Control Panel, you might have to change the view to either Large or Small icons and select Keyboard.

Repeat delay is how long you have to hold a key for it to repeat, rate is how quickly it repeats after that. At Longest and Slowest it is like 30 seconds of holding for my computer

I set the repeat delay to short and the repeat rate to fast then tested. The keys (not just backspace, but all keys) will repeat about at about 3 second intervals. Totally unacceptable!

Please update your 'My Computer' to include a model #. The device as listed comes in many different flavours that range from an all-in-one with touchscreen to a mini laptop available with various AMD or Intel processors.

    1) How long has this problem been happening?

    2) Any recent hardware or software or device driver updates?

    Check the Windows update history.

    3) When you set the repeat delay/rate above, did the test window function correctly or not?

    4) Does your model have a keyboard or a touchscreen or both?

    5) Have you tested with an external keyboard?

Check the keyboard driver in the Device Manager to see if it has been recently updated and report. Look for a recent driver file update and determine if a driver roll-back is available. Don't use the roll-back feature yet, I just want to know if it's greyed out or available.

    6) Have you updated the bios or other drivers recently?

Done - with additional notes. The model # is 15IIL05. As previously noted in the specs, it's an Ideapad Flex - so it's a laptop, with a touchscreen.
    1) How long has this problem been happening?
Just a few days, as noted in my OP.

    2) Any recent hardware or software or device driver updates?
Yes, as noted in my OP - it was a Microsoft update. I have actually turned updates OFF, so am frustrated by having problems occur when it insists on updating when I don't want it to.
    3) When you set the repeat delay/rate above, did the test window function correctly or not?backspace key behavior changed-0713-keyboard-properties.jpg
    No, it did not.
    4) Does your model have a keyboard or a touchscreen or both?
    Both
    5) Have you tested with an external keyboard?
I had not thought of that, but recently purchased an external keyboard for my Raspberry Pi. I tested it this morning, and it works perfectly!

There are two HID Compliant Devices listed and one Standard PS/2 Keyboard listed. None have a rollback available.
    6) Have you updated the bios or other drivers recently?
Not since this problem, but about a month ago, yes on the advice of the person helping me in this thread:
    misbehaving mouse after driver updates
with a mouse problem which is still unresolved and I am using a backup mouse.

Could this possibly be caused by Microsoft Text Input Application? I found it in Task Mgr but I've never seen/noticed it before, and it's currently using a boatload of CPU. I have thus far not found an easy way to disable this (apparently it's for an on-screen keyboard, which I don't use).

Thanks for updating your 'My Computer' section, it truly does help anyone trying to assist. And thanks for answering all my questions and presenting the results clearly, the effort does help me & anyone following this thread.

There are many solutions to control Windows & driver updates, I use Matthew Wai's CMD & VB scripts and have no surprises.

This fact leads me to believe the fault is most likely driver related.

Something I didn't see, what are the driver dates and rev #s for the keyboard items? While you're in the Device Manager, you may as well review & report the mouse driver dates & rev #s. Were these drivers recently updated and soon after the problems started.

Keep in mind that the driver dates listed in the Device Manager may not reflect when they were actually updated, you can check your Windows Update history and it should indicate any recent driver updates.

In your original post dated July 12th, you say that 2 days prior, your PC was automatically updated. Could you please look in the Update History to see if it has a listing for on or about July 10th? Please show a screen capture with these updates.

We can investigate this mouse problem once we get the keyboard mystery solved but it again sounds like it might be a driver issue.

If this application was causing the issue, I would question why an external keyboard functions correctly. Is it continuing to use excessive cpu?

Thank YOU for taking the time to exercise your expertise to help me.

All listed keyboards (HID Keyboard #1 & #2 & Standard PS/2 Keyboard) have a driver date of 6/21/2006 and are version 10.0.19041.1. The "roll back driver" button is greyed out for all 3. There are 3 HID-compliant mouses with the same driver date & version number as the keyboards, and 1 Logitech HID-compliant Unifying Mouse with a driver date of 10/14/20 & driver version 6.0.45.0 (I'm assuming this is the new mouse/keyboard combo I purchased for my Pi).

Keep in mind that the driver dates listed in the Device Manager may not reflect when they were actually updated, you can check your Windows Update history and it should indicate any recent driver updates. There were only 6 updates listed - what's happened to all the rest? The computer will be 1 year old on 7/21. (see "installed updates" img)
Looking for update history (finally found it under Programs & Features), I found this prompt to finish installing device s/w - didn't want to add to the existing problem, so left it untouched for now. (see "dev sw" image)
If this application was causing the issue, I would question why an external keyboard functions correctly. Is it continuing to use excessive cpu?
I killed the process, so no.

You're most welcome, it's my pleasure to assist you. Spending time here at Ten Forums keeps my mind busy.

6/21/2006 is usual for Microsoft standard drivers. The version 19041.1 is interesting given 19041 is winver 2004. I understand that 20H2 isn't much different but I'm a bit surprised M$ would keep the drivers named after the previous winver, this just seems like sloppy work.

I'll have to look around tomorrow when I get back to my PC, using my phone now.

From the search on your taskbar, could you please type winver followed by enter and post a screenshot of the results?

If you also search windows update history from the taskbar, you will see a different report like the image I posted. It will also include an area for driver updates.

When did you update to 20H2?

I found a Command Line to disable that app, others had similar complaints.

I would have killed that process too, I've heard it returns after the next boot. If that's the case, disabling might be preferred.

Have you trued/tested another keyboard (also use different connection from the one you have - i.e. if wireless, test cabled).

Wouldn't be the first time, by a long shot, that such a phenomenon has been purely co-incidental.
