NMI, checking, what I found is this:

    What The Hell Is THIS?-screenshot-184-.png

I clicked on all the others days that have entries; none have the exact entries you mention, but I get the point. Not that I ever thought about it, but I guess M$ downloads/updates stuff outside of/in addition to what most people consider the normal 'Windows' update process (which I have stopped for 35 days).

    Thanks for the info.

Some of the xbox stuff you can uninstall, not all unfortunately, but some of it, just go in the start menu, and right click each xbox entry, you may have to slide to the next drop down box. But it's there if you look hard enough. That will just about keep the other stuff shut off also. I keep it uninstalled on new machines, or reinstalls of windows, whatever.

There's a preventative measure that will help avoid this in the future. Simply disable updates.

These updates just install unwanted (and often buggy) features.
If there's a security update worth having you can install it manually.

I'm using 1809 at home at 1709 at work. Both work like a charm. And I get no surprise changes from Lord Microsoft.

RobbyK, the only Start menu entry I have for Xbox is Xbox Game Bar. I went into Settings and saw a couple places where, in theory, I could uninstall Xbox. I've done what I can do; whether it did what I want I don't know. The Start menu entry is still there.

margrave55, I did state that I have updates paused for 35 days. So if anything was updated recently, that means M$ is doing updates for smaller stuff than features/security outside the protocol of those bigger updates. And if it's possible to "disable updates," not just pause them, please tell me how.

You could uninstall the Xbox Gamebar completely:
    Uninstall Apps in Windows 10

E.g. Option 10- search for xbox

    - note the instructions at the top of the section carefully.

(You can choose to uninstall for all accounts or just one in that tutorial)

And from the Tutorial section - which you're free to browse and search:
Turn On or Off Automatic Updates for Apps in Windows 10 Store

    - but that may not be the best approach.

Thanks, dalchina, but that's more than I want to get into. But again, if somebody can tell me how to gain more control over the general update process, I'll certainly listen to that. Lots of suggestions were given when W10 was first released, and I used some of those, but M$ quickly closed them off, so now all I know to do is what little control we have in Settings.

    Thanks again.

Settings - in Home you have little control. Pro up - a lot more - defer feature upgrades for 365 days, set updates to Notify in Group Policy. Note how I've done this search.

    What The Hell Is THIS?-1.jpg

If you have Home there are two tutorials on controlling Windows Update- disabling it and using 3rd party programs to manually scan for updates and select them using check boxes.

There are tutorials on managing driver updates- disabling for selected devices, all, not including in automatic updates.

Older options and other 3rd party programs for disabling Windows Update exist.
e.g. Sledgehammer, WUmgr, Windows Update Minitool .....

These have all been described many many times in tenforums threads.

Here's a good way to search - note how I've done it:

There's a switch to disable automatic app updates in Microsoft Store Settings:

    Thanks, guys.

My Member info in the left pane does show that I have Pro, not Home. I went to M$ Store and changed the setting to not update automatically. And it shows a history of downloads, so this apparently happens outside the normal features/security update process we all know of. The '365 day' option disappeared some time ago as far as I can tell; now, in an obvious way, it's just 35 days. I'll take a closer look later at the suggested links and methods

    Thanks again.

I've taken a look at the suggestions provided. The tutorials generally are pretty old, and M$ keeps changing how the 'update' process works. Again, all we seem to have access to now in Settings is a 35-day pause, not 365 days. And the methods and tools recommended generally are more than I want to get involved with and generally talk about ending updates for good and forever, not just giving me more control. I'll keep using the 'pause' feature to allow time for problems to be found and fixed before I'm forced to update.

Thanks again to everybody who responded.
