Properties can no longer be moved with the file.

Recently after my update to 21H1, I keep getting this "1 interrupted Action" information pop-up when I try to move a file from my desktop to another location on the hard drive or external USB. The same "1 interrupted action" pop-up occurs even when trying to use the copy and paste method.

The only solution I found that works to move or copy a file with its properties is the "xcopy" command in the CMD environment.

What are the consequences of moving the file without its properties? I mean if it wasn't important; then why the necessity for the pop-up warning all the sudden?

Here is a screen clip of the warning pop-up for both the "Move" and "Copy" features:

This is happening with all types of files and not just .bat files and it is quite irritating trying to move files between drives or other locations on the hard disk using the xcopy feature because it seems to be the only way to move a file and retain its properties.

Is there a work-around for this scenario?

I mean of course I want to retain the properties of each file, but why is it that all the sudden a file cannot be moved within the hard drive without losing its properties if you move it?

This just doesn't make any sense why it is acting like the files are backup files when they are not.

Hi, you can get such a message if copying to a file system which does not support the same properties e.g. NTFS -> FAT32.

Presumably that's not the case here.

Consider running basic disk checks- start with
    Hard Disk Sentinel (functional trial)
    and if ok run
    chkdsk X: /scan
changing X to each of the relevant drive letters from an admin command prompt.

Another thought- try the same copy when in Safe Mode and see what happens.

    You called that one right!

I performed all the basic disk checks and they came up clean. I may run Sentinel at some point to check something else non-related to file structure.

I was able to repair the ability to move the files with their properties within the hard drive using "sfc /scannow"; but as you pointed out, if I have to move the files to a different file system structure than what they are being moved from, I get the warning about the properties not being able to be carried over.

Hmmmm...........I'm wondering if when I "xcopy" the files from NTFS to ExFAT if it really is retaining the file properties. I mean to imply, why would "xcopy" bypass the warning?

Xcopy is suppose to be the ultimate file mover, so I find it intriguing that the standard interface would throw the warning and an elevated CMD environment would not when copying or moving a file to a different file system.......?

No, it's not copying all the properties, xcopy just isn't warning you of that. The properties concerned, particularly for that downloaded 'Reset Windows Update Components.bat', are the file's 'Alternate Data Stream'. This is a property only available on the NTFS file system and cannot be copied to ExFat or other file systems. In the case of a download like this it's where the 'This file came from another computer' property is stored.

Streams will examine the files and directories (note that directories can also have alternate data streams) you specify and inform you of the name and sizes of any named streams it encounters within those files.

Thank you very kindly for that Bree!

I'm in the process of backing up the data on the USB and formatting it to NTFS. I can afford to lose a little extra space on the USB since I think the NTFS system file structure needs more resources.

Thank you also for the links!

    Also, thank you dalchina!

I'm trying to get into the habit of not quoting all the time because you Guru's are probably tired of getting notified every twenty seconds!
