File Explorer expand selected folder in left pane

I want the left pane folder to open and show subfolders when I click on the filename, instead of having to click the little carat to the left of the folder to get this to happen. Windows 10 version 20H2.

I tried that and it doesn't work. When I click a folder in the left pane, i want the subfolders below it in the left pane to be shown. The same thing that happens now when you click the carat next to the folder.

Just double-click on the folder in the File explorer, Navigation pane and it should expand to show all its sub-folders just as if you had clicked on the small downward arrow symbol [the "carat"].

I wish this could be done with a setting so only a single-click would be needed but this is what I was looking for.
    Thanks

Presumably the reason that's not so is to provide the distinction between selection and action.
