mkv files freeze computer on download

I'm not even getting a chance to try and play them. Upon download, they cause my computer to hang up. And I can't delete the file by normal means, I have to do all kinds of extra stuff to get it off my computer, after which it works fine again. Every time I've tried downloading a mkv file I run into the same problem. Anyone run into this problem and have a fix?

Relevant applications/sites: Windows 10, Firefox, Video DownloadHelper (without conversion registration), mostly YouTube videos

Only thing that springs to mind is some sort of possible odd reaction to MKV files by antivirus software.

I'm sure someone else will have better ideas but that's all I have at the moment.

Where are you getting the MKV files from? Is this a torrent download? Is it downloaded in MKV format or is it compressed? A downloaded file, if not executed should not lock you system. Give us more detail.

Which video downloader do you use?
Perhaps you could try---4K Video downloader--- available from---4kdownload.com---which is a safe site, last time I used it.
    Please read the user guide.

OP edited to provide additional info about apps involved.

Based on my searches, it's probably a Windows 10 deficiency. I observed in the Task Manager that a COM surrogate was sucking up all the CPU. I read a report of a similar experience and the person thought that a dllhost process related to creating thumbnails was causing the problem.

Looking for a fix or workaround so I can download mkv files, use Explorer to find and play them, and not have some process hog all the cpu.

I have that extension installed but cannot comment on usage due to forum rules. The aggregator doesn't work well with MKV.

You should check out FreeTube. You should be able to figure out usage.

Do i need to install YouTube app in Google Chrome?

Perhaps if you ran ---sfc /scannow---and ---dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth---to eliminate any possible file corruption. Then check Reliability History and ---dxdiag--- for any reports.
The problem appears to exist within your installation of Win 10 and associated programmes, not in the publically available version.
A site for specific video problems is---videohelp.com---.

    I'll try those steps, thanks.

I also found info about a registry change that might help (probably removes windows ability to try and create a thumbnail for mkv files).
