when the devil usurps my system

Occasionally when I am in a document and go to scroll using the mouse wheel the size of the print changes. As in all things MS there must be a setting somewhere that causes this. Question is where? W up to date.

Could the Ctrl key be sticking down sometimes? Try a different keyboard to see if that fixes it.

That function, part of Windows and probably Linux and Mac Operating Systems, is accessed by holding down the Ctrl key and rolling the scroll wheel on the mouse or by holding down the Ctrl key and pressing + or - key. Using some program such as HotKey may change that.

Is it possible that your cursor was sitting over the [Word, for example] zoom control so what you saw was just that?
