I really want to be able to use system restore I do have backup disks but I am an old timer I'm already familiar with it and really just want my windows settings saved like system restore is supposed to do. It is enabled for C: and does make restore points but they do nothing...

Perhaps if you try using ---sfc /scannow---followed by---dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth---and then create another Restore point and see if that works.
The Win 10 Restore tool is not noted for its effectiveness and reliance is placed more on Macrium for restoration.

with appropriate screenshots illustrating both that and what happens if you try to start using one to restore your PC?but they do nothing...
Please note that as joeandmarg0 says, SR is great when it works as it does not affect personal data when restoring, but is fragile and can readily sulk for some months, typically allowing restore points to be created but then failing to complete restoration. I've only ever seen that accompanied by an error message.
Fixing that situation is near impossible- on the odd occasion I've seen it happen, it resolved itself after some weeks or months when I eventually tried it again. (Enormous thread with lots of users participating).
Bear in mind the limitations of SR.
- It will almost certainly not help if your PC is not bootable.
- It cannot be used to revert to a previous major build (there are other means in a time limit).
- It does not protect you from disk failure.
For all of these reasons, and for a ful backup, ensure you are using disk imaging as is endlessly recommended here e.g. Macrium reflect (free).
These are usefully complementary, and the differences must be understood.
Often third party antivirus software can interfere with system restore. Try restoring while in safe mode.
I would also recommend using disk imaging software like Macrium Reflect.
The solution is having a lot of them that you can try. Because some actually don't work, but if you have a lot o System Restore Points you can keep trying until you find one that works.
The thing with system restore many updates have to remove them as doing a restore when key files have changed would give problems. A major update deletes all restore points as all files arnt the same
System Restore, it’s a flawed process and has been for years in my opinion. There are so many variables that can make it fail. I haven’t been able to get it to work correctly on several machines, with different OSs for years (I have tried all possible solutions I have read about to get round this). I certainly can’t rely on it working when I want it to.
I do know that if I did a clean install of Windows, it would miraculously start to work which perhaps reinforces my theory that it might be something that ‘I’m’ (you are) doing habitually, but inadvertently, somewhere down the line to cause the failures.
AntiVirus is often quoted as being the problem. Windows often reports, after a SR failure, that it is highly like to be an AntiVirus program running in the background.
I’ve ran Windows in machines for test purposes in the past with no AntiVirus installed and any inbuilt security totally disabled yet that error re the AV still can show after a SR failure.
I’d advise anyone and everyone not to rely on System Restore as I’m sure it will let them down at some point. That point maybe when you need it the most.
System Images are advantageous. Downside is they take much longer to deploy than a SR, but they have always worked in my experience.
I have had a 100% success rate when a System Image is restored and these days I always have SR disabled to save space as I know from my experience, SR is likely to not complete and will fail.
I think we should wait for some actual evidence from Rammstein420 as to what the problem is that's actually being experienced. I asked for screenshots... nothing yet.
