Can't delete or rename some files

I've been having trouble with deleting and renaming *some* files for months now. I'm running Windows 10 2OH2.

The problem typically manifests itself in File Explorer. I'll try to delete or rename a file or folder and it usually works but sometimes, it simply won't work. The symptoms are not consistent: sometimes, when I right-click a file and choose delete, absolutely nothing happens. Sometimes, when I try to delete a folder, I get the dialogue that shows it is looking for the files in the folder but it never finds anything, no matter how long I wait. I eventually cancel the dialogue because nothing is happening. When I try to rename a file or folder, it either works or the whole dialogue goes grey and never comes back; eventually, I have to kill File Explorer in Task Manager.

I've tried going old school and simply using DEL commands at the command processor but that doesn't work either. When I tried deleting with the power shell, that failed too. I ran a chkdsk with no flags just to see if the file system was messed up but it didn't find any errors. Also, I installed Unlocker and it is able to delete *some* of the files that File Explorer can't delete but I haven't succeeded in renaming the files that won't rename with File Explorer.

I'd love to fix this problem because I'm accumulating files and folders that I don't want any more. Can anyone suggest a fix?

This method might work for you.
    Left click on the file/folder.
    RIGHT click on the selection.
    Left click on "Properties"
    Left click on "Details" tab
At the bottom of the window, left click on "Remove properties and personal information"
In the new window, left click on the second radio button "Remove the following properties from this file"
In the SAME window, left click "Select all"
In the SAME widow, left click "O.K."
In the "Details" tab window, left click "O.K."
Should now, hopefully,be in the Recycle bin

Hi, try two basic diagnostic steps.
    a. Boot to Safe Mode.
Can you then delete one of the 'undeletable' files?

    b. Create a new user for test purposes. Log in as that user.
Again, can you then delete one of the 'undeletable' files?

Where are the files located with which you have this problem? If in various locations, is there anything consistent about these?

What types of files are they?

I had a file with extension .ts that was not deletable. Any attempt to access the file caused the computer to lock up.

As dalchina mentions, booting to safe mode made the file accessible.

Can you move them to another hard drive or directory higher up in the file system? I have this issue with files/folders that have some bogus long name in them when I download something. S@#@Dasdrf3eeawereEasdfepeasdrfeoeoadfeeo.pdf or something like that. Or does the file contain illegal or unrecognized characters (because you do not have the language pack installed) such as Russian / Japanese / Korean / etc characters in it?

In my experiance this means one of this things:

    • Forbidden Filenames
    • File name + path too long (more than 260 characters and long file names not enabled in Windows)
    • File is being used by some program or process
    • Permission Problems (user has not enough rights to delete or modify file)
