    Boot order on new Win 10 desktop computer

    Hello,

    I recently built a new Win 10 desktop that seems to work great! My question deals with the boot process. The last built I did was at least 10+ years ago using Win XP I think then later upgraded to Win 7. At that time I could change the boot order in the bios which I would set to the hard disk first, CDROM second after installing Windows from the CDROM drive. That way you didn't have to listen to the grind of the CDROM drive looking for a disk every time you started the computer.

    With my new build, I used a SSD M.2 drive instead of a hard drive and installed a ASUS DVD drive that I loaded the software from. After finishing the install, every time it boots you hear the grind of the DVD drive at the same time it is booting from the SSD but it doesn't show up in the boot order area of the bios.

    Is there a fix for this or am I just going to have to live with it?

    Thank you!

    Your BIOS/UEFI should still allow you to set the boot order.

    Do you only hear this noise if you have a disk in the drive?

    Unplug the power cable, You don`t need it anymore.

    When you do just plug it back in.

    I had exactly the same issue with my desktop, but did as AddRAM suggested and simply unplugged the optical drive. Now boots in seconds and silently. Before it would "grind away" and take 30 seconds to get past it, although the boot option for DVD was set 3rd on the BIOS list.

    Thanks to all for the replies. First to dalchina, no, there was no disk in the drive but the sound is as if it was scanning for a disk. I have done as addRAM and skcusime have suggested and unplugged the power cable to the DVD drive and now no unnecessary sound!

    The DVD drive doesn't show up as a boot device in the bios but it is recognized as being connected to one of the SATA jacks. As stated above, the only drive that shows up as a bootable device is my SSD in the M.2 slot. I do use the DVD drive from time to time and probably should buy one that just plugs into a USB port for ease of access so I don't have to open the case when I want to use it.

    Thanks again for the help.

    @AddRAM

    I was thinking about doing this simple thing, and wondered whether -- if I unplug the power cable, but leave the SATA cable connected -- my DVD/RW will show up in This PC, in Disk Management, in both, or in neither. Just curious.

    [update 05 June]
    Pulled the plug on one, to see. No show in This PC, and no show in Disk Management. And no noise at all at startup. Curiosity satisfied.

    You can buy an internal DVD/RW drive from NewEgg, Amazon, or Ebay for under $30. Very easy to replace, especially if you built your computer.
