Taking screenshots while drive disconnected - Where do they go?

    Hi,
    [Windows 10]
Assuming your pictures [+screenshots] folder is on an external drive and you take screenshots when the drive isn't connected. Where are they saved?

WinKey + PrtScn still flashes, presumably taking the shot. But I can't locate the images in any of the Temp folders I've searched.

    Thanks

That's a curious choice- I wonder how it affects a feature upgrade- for example if your drive was not connected or allocated a different drive letter.

Screenshots are stored in the clipboard which is stored in ram.

I was talking about the WinKey + PrtScn function which saves the image file to the 'Screenshots' folder in Pictures

You could see if there's anything recorded in your event log at that time.
But why would you (presumably) relocate such a folder to an external drive?

Perhaps they aren't saved anywhere. Perhaps it tries to save on the missing drive, fails and gives up.

1 You could always use MS SysInternals ProcMon to investigate this situation.
2 Why have you asked the question?
3 What are you actually trying to achieve?

Because it's a laptop and I have gigabytes of pictures. And to view or work on them when I need to on a different computer.

How do I check the event log?

    Ok.

    1. No idea how to do that.
    2. Because that's the situation I'm in.
    3. I'm trying to find screencaps I took while my drive was disconnected.

Didn't expect this to be such an issue. For example, making screen recordings with Game Bar simply saves them in a temp folder if the save location isn't available. I thought it would be the same with Screencaps.

You've lost the ones you took while the drive was disconnected. All you can do is avoid a repetition.

I suggest you connect the drive, go to your Screenshots folder, right-click on it and relocate the Screenshots folder to your internal drive.

My Screenshots folder, just for example, is relocated to my internal drive [actually my Desktop folder, to which Windows objects but allows me to do it].

Like the title says, does anyone know what happens to WinKey+PrtSn screenshots if the save location is missing?

Why have you ignored the solution I proposed?
