after a good night's sleep, after the "fiasco" some thoughts:

resetting the CMOS has helped to some extent : that is, I can now through F8 boot directly to the NVMe. And do so predictably.

does this mean that the NVMe is viable as a boot drive? that boot partitions are there and are working?? I have no idea.
I earlier sent an imagine from Macrium that showed 4 partitions, a few of which have no labels or indication of what they do.

Next steps. I would hate to have to rebuild machine especially if there is no guarantee that the NVMe can be made to boot.

    Sorry. Right side up.

If the problem is fixed, you would be able to automatically boot from the NVMe drive, without needing to manually boot from the NVMe.

Using the F8 menu to boot from the NVMe is the same as using Boot Override in the BIOS.

    No.
Temporarily unhook all the other drives, except Disk 4.
You delete all the partitions on Disk 4, then do a clean install of Windows (efi, C:, and recovery).
Then you restore JUST the C: partition, keeping the EFI and recovery partitions from the clean install.

You'll still have all three partitions. It's just the the EFI and Rewcovery partitions will be from the clean install, and the C: partition will be from the backup.
You're doing a clean install only to rebuilt the EFI and Recovery partition. You can clean the partition and rebuild it with bcdboot C:\Windows /s W: /f UEFI (W is the EFI partition).

I don't think there is anything wrong with EFI or Recover partition. The computer is booting (slow) but can't boot on disk priority.
I think that a BIOS re flash and a chkdsk x: /f on all partitions will fix it.

i have a computer technician coming today. i will let you know what happens. if you have any bullet points for him, please post them. (although I have given him a link to this big, big thread.)

Great thanks to everyone who has intervened.

    humble pie.
    the machine is working.
brought it to my computer guy in somers new york.
figured it out in five minutes.
what threw the computer into the bios was the cpu fan whose setting was altered somehow during an update or whatever.
i had never been in the bios before and didn't know what the fan message meant at the bottom of the boot screen in the bios.
just thought it was about the Sabrent NVMe not booting properly.

the technician changed a setting. the fan error went away.
and here i am writing this note on the machine that causes so many problems.

the most important thing though is the solidarity all of you showed me and each other.
precious stuff in these times of friction. at least there are now some meeting points where ideas can be exchanged nicely and sincerely.

My hat is off to you. I raise a glass to all of you.

    @rboris

First thing you need to do now, is save your BIOS settings to a Profile on the Tools tab.

Then you'll want to make a fresh, new Macrium Reflect backup, if you haven't don't that already.

Glad you got it worked out.
