Like if there is a wind storm or whatever going on. Or do you think that it's not risky at all?

If weather gets nasty I usually shutdown, and even unplug stuff!

I've had 2 routers fry because of electrical storms!

UPS is sound advice. So is use common sense. Would you watch TV in a lightning storm?

Shutdown and unplug all devices from power points and network connections (internal and external).

UPS is not going to be much good in a lightning strike that fries your device.

Fire up the laptop in a standalone environment, connect to mobile phone wifi hotspot ... no wires.

Tell you the truth, the fear of the power going out whenever there's heavy winds in my area makes me want to get a laptop instead of using a desktop.

Most UPS devices are more than a big battery. They are power conditioners and surge protection also. Nothing will protect against a direct hit of 50000 volts. You do the best you can for the most probable circumstances.

Would a common power outage without lightning cause that to happen?
