Good to know this problem is not something specific to my PC and that it has been there since the beginning. For me, it seems to manifest whenever the application like File Explorer is maximized.

By disabling "Launch folder windows in a separate process" on folder option will fix this issue.

That setting was never enabled in my File Explorer, so unfortunately not a solution for me.

Hi, I seen to have this problem for example when I open a folder to browse the files and say I want to copy/delete a particular file, then the confirmation dialog box is hiding behind the main explorer window, so I have to minimise explorer in order to click ok or the appropriate action that is needed. Anyone else seen this. Thanks Joe
The issue is when you open a folder and select a file to copy/delete it, a confirmation dialog box hides behind the file explorer windows.
--- Does always apply whether it’s a Word, Excel, PDF or other type of document?

On the copy/delete, I’m thinking when you want to copy and then paste that document in the location of your choice. On the delete, I’m thinking of when you delete a file and it automatically goes to the recycle bin. I have 2 Windows 10 computers and I don’t get a dialog box on either one.

However; when I delete a file and it’s automatically goes to the recycle bin, when I want to delete it from the recycle bin, a dialog box does show up automatically on top and I do not have to minimize the file explorer window. Here is a screenshot of what I mean:

Maybe there’s a setting for what my system does. But I don't know how to find it.

Here is an article on dialog boxes you might find interesting
    Dialog Boxes Dialog Boxes (Windows)
--- There are 7 instances that address dialog box confirmations.
--- You’ll probably get more out of them than I could.

    There’s also this article
Enable Delete Confirmation Dialog Box in Windows 10
Enable Delete Confirmation Dialog Box in Windows 10 | iSumsoft
    Part of it contains
“However, when you delete something in Windows 10/8, you won’t be prompted with a Delete Confirmation dialog anymore; that’s because Windows 10/8 disable it by default.”
--- Is it possible that feature was enabled and the result is what you see?

    Nightmare over! Problem solved.

    Here's what worked:

    go to
    >control panel
    >ease of access
    >make the mouse easier to use
    >uncheck boxes for:
"activate a window by hovering over it with a mouse"
"prevent windows from being automatically arranged when moved to the edge of the screen" (this one may be optional, but I just left it blank in case"

I have no idea how this got set up with the "activate a window. . ." box checked. I was having trouble with most windows getting hidden behind others when I moved my mouse to click on them. For instance, the calculator would always "disappear" since it was usually smaller than other windows. Sometimes I didn't even see them, like dialogue boxes, but they got hidden behind other larger windows like my browser. The dialog boxes were the most frustrating, though since nothing would work.

I can't take credit for this solution, since the concierge service at costco worked with me for an hour to solve it. But thought I'd post it here in case that helps anyone.

Not a bug, it was a feature! I was about to buy a Mac.

Sorry, this is not a solution for everyone. My mouse settings were already unchecked, and my File Explorer dialogs are invisible behind other windows most of the time, on two completely different Win10 machines (a desktop with Win10 Pro and a laptop with Win10 Home).

(It must be a "feature" because Microsoft doesn't seem to think it's a problem.)

close but no cigar. The only thing that helps is to notice that the folder icon in the taskbar changes color and starts flashing. Then you know there's a dialog you have to answer that's hidden behind other explorer windows.
