Who Crashed will I think only assist if there is an actual CRASH with a dump - rather than a freeze
The answer to try and establish the cause IMHO lies in a clean boot as I suggested back on post 3.

    This
Thanks Denis, I think I’ll give that a try as although when tested five times earlier today (and the pc went to sleep just fine every time) when I pressed the sleep button at 16:03 (bath time for the grandchildren) it froze again.
supports that - as on the time it froze - some manner of background process was running which is more than likely going to be a third party process.

Who Crashed reported a last crash back in 2020 so nothing to do with the current issue.

Yep. Thanks for the advice which I followed.

I did a clean boot and pc went to sleep as expected.

Re-enabled some of the disabled services and it still went to sleep.

Beginning to look like this is an intermittent problem.

Is Kaspersky Internet Security the AV in use -
    as I asked
I would also check your scan settings on Kaspersky Internet Security
If that was scanning it could possibly stop the computer sleeping
Check as well on the last occasion when it did freeze - eg the 6th sleep described in your previous post when the last scan was on the Kaspersky GUI and indeed the last update for Kaspersky.

Well, the problem (whatever it is) does indeed seem to be intermittent.

Sometimes the pc goes to sleep as expected, other thimes it doesn't.

All of the investigative work so far has not identified the issue (I'm pretty sure it isn't caused by Kaspersky).

So, I'll just have to re-clone the drive from a backup. I swapped the drives over the other day and updated the backup drive (a conventional hard disk) and confirmed that it all works properly - so onward with Macrium!

You may ask why I didn't do that before as I have the ability to do so?

The scientist in me wanted to understand what had happened and the steps required to rectify the problem. However, it seems that the inner workings of the pc are keeping the problem hidden.

Whilst it isn't a terribly satisfying answer in science, sometimes the answer is "It just is".

(I'm pretty sure it isn't caused by Kaspersky).
It may NOT be but I am not so sure you can dismiss it, out of hand.

As you know intermittent problems are harder to solve than something that is always occurring
I feel reasonably certain as I said before that it is more or less certainly a process that is of course not always running when you attempt to sleep it

    Scans - Kaspersky
    Backups
Update agent or indeed Windows updates but the latter is probably less likely

Personally if it was me I would record the time of the next failure to sleep and then check the event logs to see what was running immediately prior
    Application events
    System events.

    Hi,

I've looked at Kaspersky (shown below) and Application and System Events (also below).

No backup was scheduled (or running) and no updates in progress (afaik)

Nothing was running at or around 16:03 on Saturday 15th when I put the pc to sleep and it froze.

Very puzzled. Something is causing this but I can't fathom what.

Time is 19:50 on Tues 18th - I'm putting the pc to sleep. Let's see what happens!

UPDATE: Froze up. Looking at logs now ...

Nothing in the application event log between 19:08:06 and 20:36:17
(I logged back on to the pc at 20:36:16)

In the System event log there is an information event at 19:49:59 (from Kernel-General) saying that the sleep button was pressed and a DCOM error at the same time.

I appreciate it is not related directly to your last post, but please check if there is an update waiting to be installed.

    Thank you once again Mac

No updates appear to be waiting and WU is reporting everything is up to date.

At 9:21 last night I put the pc to sleep and it appeared to freeze and I left it to see what it would do Coming back to the pc 12 mins later and it was off. When turning on the pc this morning, it didn't wake from sleep but gave me the OS Choice page (between Windows 10 & Macrium Reflect Recovery).

That's normal - it times out and boots to Windows if you don't do anything. Have you never seen that before or did you recently install MR?

Send me please attached to your reply the V2 log
    BSOD - Posting Instructions

    .
Save log collector V2 log collector 1.1x.zip to where (downloads for example) you want.
Right click on V2 log collector 1.1x.zip in the Downloads folder and select Extract all. This will create a V2 log collector 1.1x folder.
Open the V2 log collector 1.1x folder and double click on the log-collector shortcut.
A Command Prompt window will open with the Ten Forums Log Collector running in it. Press the Enter key to start the collection process.
Upload the zip file directly into your post.

You will see that is for BSOD but it serves the purpose here, albeit you have of course not had a BSOD, as I can search the many logs attached to see if I can establish the cause of the problem with sleeping
