Storage space, does this look right to you?

So according to Windows, there's 225GB of my SSD consumed by apps. This is fairly recent, a couple of days ago I noticed the drive had filled up. It used to be much emptier, but I can't remember exactly how empty or when, because the drive was so empty I never paid any attention to it.

This is what I get when I list them, there are just 82, with the biggest at 1GB. If I tot up that lot, then allow 75MB each for the remainder I get a total of 8GB, so where's the other 217GB coming from?

There are a few other apps whose size isn't specified for some reason, but I can't imagine these add up to all that:

There are two thoughts going through my mind: Optane and spyware.

    Optane.
I don't really know what it's supposed to do, but I've seen someone online griping that it wore out a brand new SSD in under a year, and it made me wonder if the 200GB is worn out disk space. The computer also gets into moods from time to time when the fan runs all day long and flattens the battery in half the normal time. I've seen comments blaming this on Optane, too.

    Spyware.
I have an external HDD with a lot of very confidential information on it, and it runs non-stop whenever I plug it in. It also makes the computer fan run when none of my other HDDs do either. The information on the drive relates to a long running dispute that I have, so I'm suspicious that all this might be caused by spyware, but neither Malwarebytes nor McAfee are finding anything.

    Any thoughts, please?

Intel Optane this smart memory system enables faster task completion and shorter wait times.

There are many apps in Program and Features that it don't list the size. If you are running out of space, you can uninstall any programs that you don't use. If you want to see what is taking up the space, you can use Windirstat which will tell you all of the space being used.
As for your External HDD, Does this external HDD have it's own Power Adapter? If not, it may be why it is causing issues taxing the laptop.
I hope you have your extremely confidential information backed up on more then one HDD or Cloud service? This drive may have issues. I would get a brand new USB HDD with it's own Power Adapter and copy the data from the old HDD to this. You can put this HDD on the shelf as a Backup of the Backup in case of disaster.

    App & Features (225G) and System & Reserved (47G) isn't normal.
In my drive, together they are less than 20G.

It can be that windows is reporting wrong numbers or it can be that the drive needs a repair.
Open a CMD window as administrator and type:
    chkdsk c: /f
It will say your disk is in use and if you want to schedule to next start = yes
    Restart

Thanks Megahertz, I didn't think it could be normal. Drive use has suddenly shot up by hundreds of GB, and the only new app I've installed this year is just 27MB. It's gone up another 11GB since I took that screen shot 3 days ago, and I haven't installed anything at all since then. At that rate, I'll be out of space altogether in a couple of months.

When I type chkdsk I get told I don't have the privilege, even as Admin.

    @spunk, yes, it's backed up.

That's normal. You didn't run Command Prompt as Admin.

When you see the Command Prompt shortcut, right click on it and choose "Run as Administrator"

I logged in as admin, typed 'CMD Window' into the search box, and then chkdsk. I don't know what you mean by command prompt shortcut. What shortcut where?

The apps usage has gone up by another 19GB since I posted 10 hours ago.

Go to Search and type CMD, Or Command Prompt Right click the CMD shortcut results and choose Run As Administrator.
Or scroll thru the apps to Windows System Apps and Right click the command prompt shortcut and Run As Administrator.
You can also press the Windows key+X and choose Powershell (Admin) or some still have Command Prompt (Admin) click this to run in Elevated (Admin) mode. The prompt will read C:\Windows\system32 instead of C:\Users
Here type chkdsk /r to check your drive for Bad Sectors which takes longer. The chkdsk /F switch just checks for files with errors, it does not "Repair" Bad Sectors. You do not need to type C: in the command if you are running it from C: but it doesn't hurt.

There should be a application or program that are creating files.
Did you see the Windows Restore?
