    So I got this:
Storage space, does this look right to you?-chkdsk.png
    then answered Y and restarted.
While it was restarting there was a line something like:
    Fixing (C:) Stage 4: 5%(xxxxxx of yyyyyyy); Total: 40% ETA: 0:9:30
Then it started up as normal, but there was no change in the apps usage. I repeated it again with /r, but there's still no change.

Why has my User account now got unfettered access to all the Admin files without a password?

Because your User is a member of the Administrators' Group.

Otherwise you wouldn't have been able to run CMD as Admin.

But it wasn't unfettered because you got a UAC prompt to allow.

OK, thanks to Megahertz and Treesize I've found it!!

The culprit is NCH Wavepad, which I've recently been using to review a lot of very long (~8 hour) audio files. The source files are about 0.5GB MP3, but as far as I can see, when I close Wavepad it appears to be creating another 10GB journal file in some sort of uncompressed format, and hiding it away in a directory that only appears when you tick the "hidden files" box on file explorer. I assume this is the reason it take a second or two to open the file on subsequent occasions, rather than the minutes it takes the first time.

I can't find anything in Wavepad for deleting them, is it OK to delete them using File Explorer?

But I can now rifle through the admin files without any further requests for a password, which rather defeats the point of having a separate User account.

I would say you can select by type and delete all *.aud files.
