Newly installed Windows 10 20H2 - automatically turns on after 24 hrs?

I've recently installed 20H2 from an ISO and configured to my preference.

However, I've noticed that when I 'shutdown' and leave it plugged in without turning off the power supply, the system would automatically turn itself on exactly 24 hours later.

I've noticed / tested this over the past few days. From a power saving aspect, everything is as default set by Windows 10.

Is this an anomaly or a known issue?

    Interesting.

What you could first do is to create a list of the CURRENT PowerCFG settings . . .

Run the following commands by copying ALL the below AT ONCE into a CMD Prompt and press Enter . . .

    Code:

    powercfg -DeviceQuery Wake_Armed
    powercfg -DeviceQuery Wake_From_Any
    powercfg -DeviceQuery Wake_Programmable
    powercfg -LastWake
    powercfg -List
    powercfg -Requests
    powercfg /RequestsOverride
    powercfg -WakeTimers

    • When the above has finished processing . . .

[1] Right-click on the title bar of the Administrator: Command Prompt Window > Edit > Select All.
[2] Right-click on the title bar of the Administrator: Command Prompt Window again > Edit > Copy.

    • Paste the results into your post using the [CODE] tags . . .

[3] In your post, click the Hashtag icon #.
[4] Click INSIDE the [CODE]Here[CODE] tags and press the Ctrl + V keys together.

    • In your post it will look like this . . .

    Code:

    <<< Results here >>>

    I hope this helps.

MS are doing exactly the same as Google does for Android, they don't want you to turn off you PC, so that they can (so they say) keep you PC up to date, where as in fact they don't want you to turn off your PC, because they want to monitor what your computer is doing.

I had the exact same problem with 1909, and earlier versions, but it didn't happen with Win7, and I had power savings all disabled and WOL (Wake On Lan) also disabled, and yet it turned itself on after 24hrs, so I physically removed the power cord from the back of the PC, but every time I turned it back on, it kept telling me there was updates, even if the PC was turned off for a couple of hours, but if it was left on, there was no updates,,, which seems fishy to me, the exact same goes for my Android device too.

Hi Paul - really appreciate your help and guidance.

Below are the results from that system. Note under Power Scheme GUID, I've removed details as not sure if it's an identifable string - hope you don't mind and hope it doesn't affect diagnosis?

That's interesting and you may have a point.

However, I've not noticed this happening on an old system running 1803.

I don't see anything in your My Computer space. Is your machine an HP computer? My HPs did that and I found the problem in the BIOS. If yours is an HP Compaq, I can help.

I should also ask whether your machine had a previous owner.

I have two refurbs that came with a lot of settings I had to reset. Previous owners had needs I don't have.

I was a brand, spanking, new machine, I was lucky to have bought it a few days after a bulk delivery to the store, which meant it wasn't a return, and yes it is an HP, these are the specs:-

    HP Pavillion, Model p6-2143w
Quad Core AMD A6-3650 2.6Ghz APU with inbuilt Radeon GPU with 4 physical cores and 4 logical cores.
    BIOS Version/Date AMI 7.10, 4/19/2012
OS Name Microsoft Windows 10 Home
    Version 10.0.18363 Build 18363 - Version 1909
    BaseBoard Manufacturer PEGATRON CORPORATION
Installed Physical Memory (RAM) 8.00 GB
1TB SATA HDD partitioned with a win7 recovery partition.

OS is booted from MBR not UEFI

I've had this PC for around 5 years, even with same HDD, S.M.A.R.T. does show any errors at all.

Sounds like an alarm or wake timer of some sort...turn fast boot off if it's enabled. All "fast boot" does is store you ram set to disk so it can boot quicker to the state you left it in instead of reloading stuff from scratch.

So in your case if you have fast boot enabled then whatever's triggering it to wake is not actually being "shut down"...i think.

(I know this doesn't pin point your issue but it may stop it from happening until you get er figured)...may be worth going thru device manager & looking at properties on things like your network adapters & making sure they're not set to wake your machine under the Power Management tab.

OK, here's a suggestion to start with: From a powered-off state, turn on the computer and immediately press the F10 key repeatedly, about once every second. When the BIOS menu appears, press the Right arrow key to highlight the Advanced tab. Under the Advanced tab, select BIOS Power-On. Use the up and down arrows to select each day, and use the left-right arrow keys to change any enabled settings to disabled. When all are disabled, press F10 to accept your settings, then go up to the top menu and over to the left end and Enter to select that leftmost menu, then down to Save Changes and Exit.

    Newly installed Windows 10 20H2 - automatically turns on after 24 hrs?-bios-power-.jpg

If you haven't manually changed any of the BIOS settings in the five years you've had this machine, you might first try this: go into the BIOS as above, select the leftmost menu, arrow down to Set Defaults and Exit, and accept that.

Windows will boot after you exit the BIOS.

Please let us know (presumably after you've waited the necessary 24 hours to see whether the computer turns itself on again) whether this solves the problem.
