Hi, I've not come across this one before- if you press Win key +X you should see the same popup menu. Does it behave the same way?

    Ok, try this:
Winkey + X menu shortcuts not working in Win 8.1
(Ignore the fact it's about Win 8.1).
When you're using shellexview, be careful NOT to disable MS items. Otherwise you can use a 'binary chop' approach to try to identify culprits, starting by disabling all but MS items.

    right click start button

I know. I have another win 10 machine and they work fine there. Trying to figure out if there is something in the bios that is interrupting the action here...

I've recently seen a couple of win 10 systems that needed chkdsk run on them to re-do an index file. Don't yet know whether it is caused by the upgrade but I am now going to make sure I run chkdsk on all systems I meet in the future.

The last one had problems running a few things, one of which was printing.

The odds are that this won't fix your problem, but, hey, it doesn't take long and it is a good thing to run periodically, anyway.

sailor44- the reports I've read indicate an incompatibility between sthg installed and Windows 10. The BIOS is the wrong area.
    Please see this:
Winkey + X menu shortcuts not working in Win 8.1
"I'm left with one weird problem though. When I press Winkey + X to bring up the "Start" menu that has Control Panel, Command Prompt, Device Manager, etc., hardly any of the options on this menu actually work."
"I just managed to resolve this. For the benefit of anyone else who encounters this issue in the future, it seems it's caused by one or more desktop applications that install [Win 8 incompatible] shell extensions into the Windows right-click context menu.

I downloaded and ran http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html from Nir Sofer's brilliant site. This utility lists every shell extension and allows you to quickly disable them, so I just disabled each non-Microsoft one in turn (you must then restart Windows Explorer), until I found the culprit.

With offending shell extension disabled ( RWipe & Clean v8.0 in my case), every option on the 8.1 Power Users (Win + X) menu now works "

Well I think I found how to fix this! I followed the suggestions on your link, and ran shellexview, disabled all the non Microsoft extensions, tried to restart the explorer (desktop icons and start menu) logged out, and back in, (need to do this to re start the explorer) and...voila! the menu now works. Apparently, one of these programs kills the operation of most of these shortcuts. Now, the chore is to re enable them one by one, and see which one is the culprit!

    star menu right click

Yes indeed! I had earlier downloaded this program but were unsure as to exactly how use it. So, I just disabled all non misrosoft shell extensions, and that fixed it. I will leave them all disabled until I come cross a missing feature on one of the programs and then enable it, and so on, till I find the offending program.
