Black screen after applying a theme

    Hello,

I was trying to edit a Windows Theme (NOT located in Resources/Themes but in my Downloads folder) with msstyleEditor and pressed "Test".
The corrupt theme was applied and I now get a black screen on reboot.

I've read Fix Black Screen on Windows 10 Caused by Corrupt Themes | Technastic but that corrupt theme is not listed under Resources/Themes.

    I'd appreciate your help.

Well.. looking at that page I note it says:
MAKE SURE YOU CREATE A SYSTEM RESTORE POINT. USE 'ON' YOUR OWN RISK!
Because sometimes a theme breaks your desktop environment and a system restore
point will be of great use. Experienced it myself.
    repeatedly.

Do you know if you have any System Restore points? Have you ever enabled System Restore?

You can use a restore point by booting your PC from e.g. a Win 10 installation disk if your PC won't boot.

The corrupt theme was applied and I now get a black screen on reboot.
    - do you mean you don't even see the lock screen?

    Thanks.

    Hello dalchina,

    Thanks for replying.

Themes applied via the "Test" feature are located in "C:\Users\Public\Documents\tmpXXXXX.msstyles".
Replacing that file has fixed the issue.

    Hello @Yaron,

I am a bit late on parade, but if you ever want to see a list of the available Restore Points, type this into a CMD Prompt and press <Enter> . . .

    Code:

    vssadmin list shadows

If you would like to output the Restore Points to a .txt file on the Desktop then use this command . . .

    Code:

    vssadmin list shadows > "%UserProfile%\Desktop\Restore_Points.txt"

If you have a Relocated Desktop then change the Path accordingly.

    I hope this helps
