Should I Wait for Windows 21H1?

    Hey all!

Word on the street is the new Windows version 21H1 is planned to come out this month.

I don't want to install 20H2 only to have to do a big update a few days later, don't like installing Windows on top of Windows, always has little issues that trigger me like leaving files behind, resetting settings or reinstalling bloatware among other things.

So should I wait or go ahead with 20H2?

I'm assuming 21H1 will most likely be riddled with bugs and instability on launch, because it's new right?

    Thanks :)

20H1, 20H2 and 21H1 are all the same, the tiny update will merely change the version number.

Perhaps about the only GUI change in 21H1 is search history (4 items) from the search box by default on the taskbar.

    21H1 includes a load of bug/security fixes.

"Windows 10 21H1 new features and changes

Windows 10 21H1 (May 2021 Update) will be the eleventh update refresh since the original release and the first semi-annual feature update of 2021, which Microsoft plans to make available during the first half of the year with fixes and a small set of features.
Microsoft typically rolls out two feature updates each year. The one in the spring is usually considered the more significant release with new features, improvements, and visual changes. At the same time, the one in the fall is a smaller update designed to complement the previous release without anything significant.
In 2021, the company is changing the approach to continue updating Windows 10, making the first update the minor release to ensure that engineers have more time to work on the second feature update, which will be considered the major rollout.

Windows 10 version 21H1 will be an optional update available for devices running versions 2004 and 20H2. However, the company will initially limit the availability, and placing safeguard holds to prevent potential problems for not yet fully compatible devices. When the new version becomes available for your device, you will receive a “Feature update to Windows 10, version 21H1” notification to download it manually through Windows Update.
If you are a “seeker,” you may force the upgrade by clicking the Check for updates button in the Windows Update settings and then clicking the Download and install button (Beta or Release Preview Channels (commercial) only). Alternatively, you will also be able to install the spring 2021 update using the Media Creation Tool to perform a clean install or in-place upgrade. Or you will also be able to use the “Update Assistant” or download the ISO file to create a USB bootable media to proceed with the upgrade."

The last major update that installed a complete new set of system files was 2004. If you are on 2004 then the update to 20H2 was a small (about 80MB) enablement package that turned on the dormant 20H2 features that were already in the system files. 21H1 will also be deployed by an enablement package, so if you are on 2004 or 20H2 then the update to 21H1 will be no mere painful than installing a cumulative update.

There is no Windows.old created when updating from 2004 to 20H2 (or to 21H1 soon). And like a CU, the enablement package can be uninstalled to return you to 2004.

Yes, the MCT will be updated as soon as 21H1 is released. The ISO/USB it will make will include the 2004 system files plus the 21H1 enablement package, and installs them both in one go. Unlike updating 2004/20H2 with the enablement package through Windows Update, a clean install with the 21H1 media will not let you uninstall the enablement package.

The next major feature update that will reset some setting to defaults and create a windows.old is expected to be 21H2.
