after reset unable to have PDF and ODT files display as preview

win ver 1909............. how can I adjust my system so I can copy and paste from within the pop-up windows as prompted to supply the win ver #, and others of this type?

Now back to the issue I am trying to resolve; I reset the computer and haven't had a critical error in the event log for 3 days now. Even after resetting, many SFCscannow and DISM restore heath runs were required even to make AV software operable.

I want for PDF, DOC and ODT type files show as a thumbnail preview instead of icons.

In IE, it will preview PDFs but not ODTs.

I did have it set to work like this prior, but now, no luck.

Any assistance or direction to a prior thread on-point?

Considering e.g. Settings, About you will find this appears as if image based- the text is not directly copiable.

I find a screen OCR tool is very helpful. For example, people post screenshots of error messages- how then does one search for these? Manually copying them is tiresome.

One such free tool is Capture2text.

Here I hit Win Z at the top left then dragged the selection over the text of interest. The program then captures and performs OCR. This is not always perfect as you can see:
after reset unable to have PDF and ODT files display as preview-1.png

That text is editable and copiable.
    Several common languages are supported.

Note that you can get a copiable version of your full build number (which is NOT 1909) by typing
    systeminfo
    at a command prompt.

What do you use to view and handle PDF and DOC files? Which is your default program for these?

There are many threads on this issue for PDFs, mostly related to Adobe software.

Your screenshot does not expand as mine do. I guess you didn't post it thus:

I use Adobe for PDFs and Open Office for ODTs.

The PDF's do show up in the WExplorer Preview pane, which is nice. The ODTs do not which is not preferred.

Both present as useless icons on the desktop and all other places. I still haven't found the steps to make both types and DOCs to present as thumbnails instead of icons as shown on the screenshot image that was uploaded as you concluded it must not have been.

I cropped the screenshot of the desktop before uploading it.

Your screenshot does not expand as mine do. I guess you didn't post it thus:

Thanks, I think the thumbnail 'setting' for the various documents may be higher up in Windows as I've enabled all settings in both programs to be found in Adobe and Open Office. Only have the WExplorer preview for PDFs and Icons otherwise for both.

pdf's - I use Sumatra. I don't normally need to edit pdfs, but I do have a program that can.

doc: As far as I know, only MS Office provides the preview handlers for Office file types.
rtf, being native, can be previewed.

That's the only setting I know that controls this behavior.

thanks, that does not make it happen and so far I've been unable to recall how I made it work on pdf, doc, and odts prior to reset, but I do recall the search for the solution was much more tedious that I should have been!

I don't need the icons as the thumbnail images make things much easier.

Apparently MS Office also has preview support for odt files, but Libre Office etc don't provide that.
How to make Windows Explorer preview panel to show LibreOffice files preview? - Super User

There used to be Word and Excel viewers which also provided previews, but these are long obsolete.

If I create an odt file with Libre Writer, the icon represents the text if medium or greater, but there's no preview.

I use Open Office, not Libre.

Representation of texts is what I am seeking in ODT and PDFs.

I am thinking that I may have installed some third party free software that made it happen but, going thru the list of uninstalled stuff does not seem to point to anything viable.

Not sure where I stumbled across the solution, likely while wading thru posts here.

I also use QTTabBar for numerous mouse hover previews...

Do you use Office, @Edwin? If so doc/docx etc whould have previews as does odt. And it appears you use Sumatra.. so should have pdf previews..

These are the handlers I have:
