PC crashed/hung, now always getting green progress bar in Explorer

I wonder if anyone can advise. On Friday my PC hung/crashed (I think it was while opening an nzb file), and I had to restart by right-clicking the start button, left-click was gone. Now every time I open windows explorer and every sub-folder I go into, I have the green progress bar loading slowly, and files only being available to access slowly. Is there a way to fix this?

P.S. I'm not even sure what that progress bar bar is exactly, it's to do with indexing folder contents?

    Windows 10 Pro, 20H2.

Could be triggered by issues relating to rendering icons for a folder containing a huge number of image files, issues with metadata, occurs in attempting to access a networked device which is not responding...

Indexing is done in the background, on changes when the PC is quiescent, and backs off when the PC is slightly busy.

    - do you have a System Restore point you could use?
    - do you have a recent disk image you could restore? (The routine use of this is recommended tirelessly by members here).

    Basic check: run
    chkdsk X: /scan
from an admin command or Powershell prompt where X: is the pertinent drive letter.

I looked and I have no System Restore points. I don't have disk images as I'm not that technical and I've done without happily for a decade. I rest on my laurels.

Edit: No folders with lots of files, however there are some rars and a few vides ~200 - 300Mb. Nothing vast.

    Thank you for your reply.

You will be sunk if your PC becomes unbootable and unrescuable or your system disk fails and be forced to do a clean install without a suitable disk image. Meanwhile you would probably be posting here hoping someone will rescue you.

    chkdsk?

I guess you haven't enabled System Restore points. Note: there's a tutorial on scheduling their creation.

    The forum prompted you thus:

    - so we don't have to keep asking... Thanks.

Thanks. I'd be sunk indeed, but I know how to clean install.

Windows version is in top post "Windows 10 Pro, 20H2".

    chkdsk?

Do you see the same problem in Safe Mode?
    - & if you create a new user for test purposes and log in as that user?

Try these and see if there's any difference - can cause file explorer issues:
Reset and Clear Recent Items and Frequent Places in Windows 10
Clear and Reset Thumbnail Cache in Windows 10

Windows version is in top post "Windows 10 Pro, 20H2".
It does. But winver gives more than merely 20H2.

Disk images restored restore all your programs, settings, data- everything.
After a clean install you have to do all that reconfiguring.
If your disk fails- or your PC is stolen- you may not have all the data backed up you hoped you had.
Anyway-- I guess this is a lost cause.

    You're very rude.

Anyhow, for reference if anyone else has this issue I've since found a solution:

Right-click on the folder, Properties -> Customize -> under 'Optimize this folder', select 'General Items' tick 'Also apply to subfolders'. This seems to be working for me, touch wood.
