My laptops each have one internal 2TB HDDs, C and D are partitions residing side by side. However, I do make bi-monthly, more or less often, full image backups onto two, in rotation, external usb 1TB HDDs. Having two physical drives, one for OS partitions, the other for data partition[s], is safer, however, one still needs to make routine backups.
OP could simply replace the small SSD with a larger one, clone or full image from original source to target, and continue onward -- leaving all OS and 3rd party installs on C partition. I left my Users on C, just my preference.

I understand the instructions given - but I have a question; what is the purpose of having a 1TB hard drive if you cannot access it? Or if it is accessible, how do I do that?
Is it only One Drive that downloads to the C drive or will anything I download or upload automatically try to go the C drive?

By default, Microsoft installs the OneDrive folder with the other user folders (Documents, Pictures, etc), whether you want/like or not.

You can easily change that default location from within OneDrive

Create a new folder on the D:\ drive called OneDrive
    Open the OneDrive program
Click the OneDrive icon in the Systray > Help and Settings > Settings
Account tab > click Unlink this PC
OneDrive will ask you to sign in (again)
After the program has (re)loaded, the Your OneDrive folder window will show, at the bottom, Change Location
Navigate to the (new) folder OneDrive on your D:\ drive
... continue on following the prompts

Is it any wonder users loathe and despise OneDrive because it assumes so much of how a user wants to set up, and offers no alternatives until after it as completed the process

    Here's a classic example of Microsoft's OneDrive default setting-up b4st4rdry ...

I didn't have OneDrive installed, so to remind myself of how it's done, I downloaded and installed the program.

It instantly created a default OneDrive folder in C:\User\[username], and immediately started to synch/backup all the files from the user folders.

I shut it down to stop that going any further.

The backup process OneDrive uses is to create all the folders in each user folder, then copy the files into those folders. Consequently, before I could stop the backup process, OneDrive had already created some empty folders, pending continuing on to fill them up with the files (which I stopped).

When I restarted OneDrive, it immediately "reverse" synched it's empty folders with my full folders, and deleted the contents from my user folder(s). There are settings to prevent this but are not accessible until after OneDrive has started doing its "thing".

Yes I agree. It shouldn't auto sync on first set-up IMHO as your issue points out. User should be able to set the settings for their own personal preference. This auto syncing can cause all sorts of problems and loss of data for new users. Hence I only use the cloud version where I manually upload or download as and when needed.

That problem must be solved. At school, cannot stay consistent in these forums.
