Storage showing as double the actual SSD size

Running Windows 10 Home 20H2 (Build 19042.964) on an AMD based Windows Surface Laptop 4 with 512GB SSD.

Even though it has a 512GB SDD as confirmed by both disk management and file explorer, settings -> system -> Storage reports the size as 951GB! I have searched but struggling to discover how to get it to report the real size.

Per the image below it shows
    • 553GB used - bigger than the size of the SDD
      519GB in system & reserved

System and reserved breaks down per this screenshot

Have tried various options including disk cleanup, SFC and DSIM to get it to report the correct size but to no avail. Any suggestions on how to correct this much appreciated?

Hi, please see this thread- there's a possible answer at the end
    https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...a3aa843?page=2

    Otherewise consider
Enable or Disable Reserved Storage in Windows 10
How to Disable “Reserved Storage” on Windows 10
    which might be somehow relevant.

    I have a 256Gb SSD, build 20H2 and indexing is enabled, and System & Reserved = 23Gb

looking at the two suggestions sadly does not solve the problem :-

"there is a possible answer at the end
https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...a3aa843?page=2" is about finding and removing a file (Index) that is consuming space. This does not work here as the problem is Storage suggests there is twice the amount of space than there really is.

"Otherwise consider How to Disable “Reserved Storage” on Windows 10 which might be somehow relevant.". The reserved space from settings -> Storage is 5.85GB which is ok. The problem is storage settings states System Files is 497GB and the combined System and Reserved is 519GB which in itself is bigger than the entire SSD.

I forgot to point out in the original post it is a new machine.

Thank you so much for your reply.

The article started with an excessively large System and Reserved space.

Kindly work your way thru that in the hope there's something that helps.

Otherwise please feel free to search for a report that deals with this exceeding the size of the disk.

many thanks for the suggestions. I have looked through and sadly none help. I have even does a fresh windows install (keeping data).

Searches for the problem show many hits but most are where the total storage size is correct but there is high use of the storage. The problem here is the storage size in settings shows as double the size of the C partition. I have found a few hits but no solution so hoping there may be some other suggestions here?

You haven't by any chance set the whole of the C: drive as 'compressed'?

good thought but the drive is not compressed. Not sure it will make any difference but going to compress and then uncompress to see if it will nudge the system to correct the storage size.

It would probably help if you showed us what Ecxplorer makes of the situation (rt-click on the C: drive and select properties, as per Bree's screen shot above. One remote possibility: are you using (knowingly or otherwise) 'storage spaces' ? It is possible to provision more space than one actually has.

How can System & reserved be 519GB?

You have 10 GB of temp files.
My suggestion is to run disk cleanup (%windir%\system32\cleanmgr.exe)

Have just performed a clean install including wiping the drive. Sadly no change.

Here are a few images that capture the problem after the fresh install

Disk Manager showing 512gb drive and 474gb c drive
Storage showing as double the actual SSD size-dm.png

    File explorer
Storage showing as double the actual SSD size-cdr.png

Setting -> System -> Storage showing system thinks the c drive is 951GB !!

Setting -> System -> Storage -> System & Reserved of which 509GB is system and reserved ""
