".tmp"? =Yes, definitely delete those, if in the usual temporary file directories.

Looks like old bad OS habits are nearly impossible to get rid of! Power outages had led me to create commands to delete them in autoexec.bat on a Windows 95 system setup from 1997, IIRC.

I doubt you can delete %WinDir% when Windows is running.

This reminds me of the windows update log files, they just keep building and building, even though I use Windows Automatic Update Manger to search for updates manually.

It`s been a ritual for me personally, to delete them and the contents of the Download folder in the Software Distribution folder every time I use either PC.

I guess it`s something to look for in Task Scheduler.
I just use disk clean up to delete whatever files it can, and don't worry about the others it can't. At this point in time, I'm nowhere in danger of running out of storage space.

I do go through the PC once in a while and delete files I know are no longer necessary, but as far as certain system folders like System 32, not messing with that unless absolutely necessary.

    That's me.

I just deleted all .tmp empty folders in that path. So far - nothing unusual, will report back tomorrow.

Whoops, fake alarm: the folders are reproducing themselves again after all deleted. So, no point to delete them...

@vanp, a few years ago, I noticed what you are seeing. I spent a couple of months just deleting the tmp’s: not any of a few other folders which are not tmp's. Never had any issues doing so.
I stopped deleting the tmp's since then and both my laptop & PC continue to run fine.

Those multiple tmp folders would just build back up.

I checked my PC this morning and there are multiple tw-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxx.tmp folders.
They contain 299 files, 6,295 folders with a size of 34.4 MB.
The ones I have checked have 0 bytes (This folder is empty).

I opened an account in the Microsoft Community and asked: what are these tmp folders for and is it ok to delete them?

The answer is ”those are remnants of Microsoft provisioning , feel free to delete them, it will not cause any harm to your device, those are just remnants.”

Since I know from past experience that they would be building back up, I don’t delete them anymore.

I have just ran this command to remove all .tmp files from C: and all is well. Windows is still there too.
    Code:
    del *.tmp /s /f /q

MeAndMyComputer, you apparently got the exact same answer, probably from the exact same person, as I. At least we're getting consistent advice.

TairikuOkami, I'll let you, Steve C, and Compumind duke this one out. It seems clear that deleting the folders won't do any harm, but also may not do any good. Again, I'll try it this weekend and see what happens. I run a process normally every weekend of checking for software updates, then cleaning my machine several ways, then creating a system image. If I can do this manually as part of this process and keep the number of folders small, maybe I'll do that.

Finally, the number of folders hasn't changed since I started this topic, whatever that may mean.

17 hours ago, when I was writing post #15, my "Local" folder was 10.35 MB as shown in the screenshot there. In the past 17 hours, I have done nothing to it. Now, it is 6.60 MB as shown in the screenshot below:

My 'Local' folder is at 34.8 MB. I assume it hasn't changed since I started this topic since the number of folders hasn't changed.
