Windows search does not search inside the files.

    Hi.
I cant take results from inside of file contents (etc .css) while I've made the relevant choice in Windows Search.
After searching the internet I read that it may be the file "Searchui.exe". Indeed, the file does not even exist on my system. Αnyone to have some idea to fix this ? (Ver. Pro 20H2 19042.928)
    Thanks.

Have you configured Windows Search to index file contents of the extensions you're interested in search?

    Yes.

I have already done these and I have tried several solutions for searchui.exe which is missing without success.

EDIT : In some directories it works in others it doesnt. I think the Searchui.exe file is not missing , but in the current version of Windows it is called Searchapp.exe. Thanks.

Are the directories that it's not working in configured to be indexed? If you search for a file in one of those non-working directories, does search find it?

searchui.exe was related to Cortana's role with respect to search. Cortana and search now have no relationship - Cortana has been relegated to the backwaters and is now a separate app.

Do not get distracted by searchui.exe - which never had anything to do with searching from file explorer's search bar.

    Note (20H2):
Windows search does not search inside the files.-1.png

If Cortana is now launched, it appears as Searchapp.exe.
    Search indexing requires searchindexer.exe.

    ==================================================
Please try these two simple checks.

    a. Open Indexing Options. Note the number of items indexed.
    b. Open a folder containing some css files you're interested in. Choose a folder where you find css search fails.
    c. Create a new txt file containing 'abracadabra'
    d. Has the number of items indexed incremented?
(This proves that indexing is working, and on that folder).

    You say
In some directories it works in others it doesn't
** Note that not all folders are indexed by default. You may have to add a folder to be indexed using Indexing Options.

    e. If the count has incremented now try a search using file explorer using the text 'abracadabra'

    Is your txt file found?

If so, you now know content indexing is enabled in that folder.

    f. Now examine a css file in that folder and see if you can find unique content in that file using file explorer.

    Strange problem , strange things.
    1) I already had the folder to be included in Search Indexer. (path : C:\Users\thana\Utilities\Vivaldi . The folder thana already inluded).
Windows search does not search inside the files.-.jpg
    2) When I create a new file, the number of indexed files increases.
    3) Searching inside the files contents not works also for .txt files (eg. abracatabra test).
    4) Yesterday , the searching inside files works for some folders , today dont work at all. Eg. : If i searched "address" from folder
C:\Users\thana\Utilities\Vivaldi (with file explorer bar always) the searching works. When i searched from folder
C:\Users\thana\Utilities\Vivaldi\CSS it doesnt (!!!!!!). Perhaps some powershell commands that i ran in order to fix the problem is the reason of that.
    5) Today dont work at any folder. At all cases searching at files names works OK. Also the search at file types eg. i take results included at "file type" and "folder" :

    6) Conclusion : searching the contents files not works.
    Thanks.

    Thank you for your reply.

I have no idea why searching should be erratic if you are searching within the same folder for the same thing.

I suggest you repeat the 'abracadabra' (did you spell it correctly? - you can choose whatever you like that you can easily remember, so long as it is likely to be unique) test on a file in e.g. your Documents folder.

(You quoted abracatabra in your post).

Convince yourself as to whether content search is working or not in Documents (an easy one - or should be- before moving on to other areas).

    - my first content search with 20H2.

See if you can get that result consistently.

If you wish, there's a tutorial on completely resettting search.

    1. Run the Windows Search Troubleshooter
    if still not working
    2. Rebuild the Search Index Database overnight
