Messed up installing Fences software, now have lost 23GB of SSD

Hi Everyone, while installing Stardock Fences I broke off the installation half way through, and now have lost approx 23GB of my SSD. I figured it is more of a general Win10 problem rather than specifically a Fences issue, that's why I'm posting here rather than on the Stardock forum.

Previously I had around 50-55GB free on my SSD, and as soon as I checked after the bungled installation, I'm down to 29GB.

After running SpaceSniffer to try to work out what is wrong, it shows 23GB as 'Unknown'.

In an attempt to sort it out, I ran sfc /scannow and DSIM/Restore Health, but while they came back healthy, the mystery remains. Also scanned the drive for errors and optimised it, no change.

Also attached an XYplorer screenshot, hope this helps. What should I do?

    Many thanks, Chigwells.

    Very strange. Stardock Fences:
    - the download is around 12Mb.
Unfortunately Control Panel, Programs and Features does not list an installed size.
My Fences installation folder is around 22Mb.
    AppData\Roaming\Stardock\Fences is around 33Mb
There's another folder of around 8Mb and a couple of very small ones.

23Gb as a number appears not to be directly related to Fences.

What does Wiztree (free) make of your disk?

To clean up your Fences installation, at an appropriate time complete its installation to the same location, assuming it will allow you, then get a copy of either Geek uninstaller or Revo Uninstaller (free) - I find the former quicker and easier- run whichever uninstaller and start the Fences uninstallation from within said uninstaller (to get more complete uninstallation).

Before you do that, I suggest you run
    chkdsk c: /scan
from an admin command prompt and report the summary result (not all the text).

    Thank you dalchina,

Here is TreeWiz screenshot (didn't know it, great software ty!).

Here is the summary text from Admin chkdsk c: /scan:

Windows has scanned the file system and found no problems.
    No further action is required.

    248835806 KB total disk space.
    212890848 KB in 309820 files.
    222332 KB in 113171 indexes.
    0 KB in bad sectors.
803010 KB in use by the system.
65536 KB occupied by the log file.
    34919616 KB available on disk.

4096 bytes in each allocation unit.
62208951 total allocation units on disk.
8729904 allocation units available on disk.
Total duration: 1.04 minutes (62976 ms).

Sorry I'm not very good at reading/understanding KB values.

As suggested I've then uninstalled Fences (with Geek Uninstaller).

    Problem still remains.

I should clarify, when I was installing Fences, towards the end of the installation when it asked for an email, I changed my mind, and aborted the installation. When I rebooted, then I saw that I had lost the approx 23GB of SSD.

Thank you for any further suggestions.

I don't see anything particularly amiss with what Wiztree is showing. You could try running a disk cleanup to see if that recovers space.

Hi again, I've done as you suggested and had a good clean out.

    I cleared out 5GB of files after running cmd.exe /c Cleanmgr /sageset:65535 & Cleanmgr /sagerun:65535.

In SpaceSniffer it now shows 33.3Gb of free space, before was 28.4GB, as you would expect.

However, the 'unknown' space (unscannable?) has remained constant at 23.1GB.

Also, in TreeWiz, shouldn't the C: value be nearer 250GB? Thanks!

That figure will be close to the space used.
I can't comment on Space Sniffer, last updated 2018. There was a similar issue with Windirstat - rather like Wiztree- but that became obsolete whereas Wiztree has just had an update.

I find using Wiztree to highlight dmp log, tmp; etl, log in red/orange (Options, Colours) useful - some programs create large dmp files in odd locations.

The tutorial offers a range of options to recover space.

Hi again, still trying to figure it out. I agree TreeWiz is great, more of a useful tool.

I came across this 'extend' file, can't explain it and it certainly isn't in File Explorer or XYplorer, could this be the unwanted phantom culprit?

Extend is a hidden system folder and shouldn't be messed with. Feel free to search and read about it.

dalchina, would booting Puppy Linux and using its file manager be helpful in this situation?
