Have you tried installing Corel using compatibility mode by right clicking on the .exe & chooing compatibility tab & trying the various options?
There are workarounds but these seem to come with major problems like broken start menu etc:

Try either of these versions of Inkscape:
Inkscape 0.91 - Windows : 32-bit | Inkscape
0.91 version (2015)
Inkscape 0.48.5 - Windows : 32-bit | Inkscape
0.48 version (2010)
Try the Windows PortableApp ones -as you can simply delete the PortableApp directory to remove the App from your PC.
I just tried some sample cdrX4 files from this site:
CorelDRAW X4 Tutorial and Example Files – The Boutons.com
And, both these versions (32bit PortableApp) could open the sample files - the 2015 Version was a bit quicker.
nb: Maybe they will work properly for the cdrX4 files (for cdr9 files, I did not ge the proper alignment of objects).
Oh well - you guys are not giving up on trying to help so I'll just have to persevere! That's this evening taken care off!
What is the Extension of the files you are trying to recover? We can look up other apps that can convert the files for you if you can tell us this information.In File Explorer, go to the toolbar to View and put a check box in File Name Extensions. Browse to the files created in Corel Draw, right click them and see what Extension the file has (ie) [filename].cdr Or whatever,

If that fails, try converting to .jpg, and other common file types, (ie) .doc, .docx etc if all else fails, the files are probably corrupted an unreadable
Not doing very well!
Tried CDR Converter - An hour later still "Pending"!
File Viewer - CDR files not amongst the ones it an open.
Inkscape - Opened the file but just displayed the image on it, not the text. (Both versions I tried - 4 and 9)
Haven't tried the Portable version yet. Since it worked for DAS10 worth a try but since other versions failed I'm not hopeful.
Other option now is to use an old machine I have, install Windows 7 and Corel X4 on that.
Am I being unreasonable at being at bit niggled at Corel for not providing a means of accessing older Corel files? I can appreciate new Corel versions not working on W10 but that shouldn't make older version files obsolete.
Have you thought about creating a VM on your current setup just to run older s/w?
Yes, but using the old computer idea saves me the trouble of learning how to create a dual boot PC.
