Opaque rectangle when dragging and dropping - can't see target - 20H2

Hi, since 'upgrading' from 1903 to 20H2, I've encoutered a few disadvantages. Yesterday I came across another. Win 1903 when dragging and dropping a file I'd been able to see the target quite easily. Now the target is obscured, whether by a rectangle with an icon reflecting what is selected or a plain (opaque) rectangle.

Formerly this was translucent (could see through it). On my other PC - staying on 1903!) - that's still true.

    * This only happens when starting to drag from file explorer- not if I start with an item on the desktop.
    - it's not related to my using Qttabar- tried uninstalling that (and it didn't affect me like that on 1903 anyway).

I've looked around, found various similar reports, but no clear way to deal with this.
I've tried various settings in Visual Effects to no avail.

I feel I'm missing something obvious, but, like networking - can see other PC by name but no longer access it so back to USB disks) upgrading to 20H2 has affected something adversely.

    Ideas welcome, thanks.

    dalchina,

I'm sorry but I don't have either of those problems despite also being on 20H2.

    1 Dragging & dropping
    Mine is still translucent.

Might your display driver or Bios need an update provided by the maker?
Might your display driver, even if no update is available, benefit from being reinstalled?

    2 Networking
    Mine still works.
My only suggestion is always to provide the checklist I use myself - A consolidated network setup checklist [post #2] - TenForums
I have always used this rather plodding approach because I had to when I first started networking.

I do hope my ideas are not a complete waste of your time,
    Best of luck,
    Denis

Thanks, Lenovo System Update has nothing new (occasionally there is despite this laptop being around 7 years old- originally Win 8). That includes a check on BIOS - updates are very easy with this range).

Windows Update (optional) had something called Lenovo Monitor - installed that, whatever it is - no change.

This has just Intel integrated graphics.

I've seen this problem reported here and there, with no resolution I've found.

Networking- thanks for the idea- having checked all 'normal' settings I'm down to more arcane ideas- and frankly I can't be bothered to spend more time on it.

Maybe sometime- it's just more bother than its worth. I just mentioned it 'cos it's one of several 20H2 upgrade irritants I've found - others being losing all my reminders held on Calendar that had been set by Cortana (which can't now do that of course having been relegated), and the loss of blue highlights for valid search syntax in file explorer, which last two I'd expected.

In (7) in your list- both PCs had access to each other in 1903, so everthing was configured. My 1903 PC can see my 20H2 PC's folders to which I've granted access. My 20H2 PC can only see an icon for the 1903 PC, but fails with green progress bar to access it. Both use the same MS Live ID as admin.

The troubleshooter fails to resolve this.

I've checked everything else in your list.

    1 Dragging & dropping
So perhaps just reinstalling the driver you have now will help.
I've never properly understood what this achieves when the driver is the same version - I just vaguely think of it as overwriting driver corruption or re-registering driver components without ever being able to decide what I mean by that.
But it can work and was something I used a few times in my Windows 7 period. And others have reported success doing this in Windows 10.

    2 Networking
My only thought is rather disruptive.
In the 1903 computer, unshare all the shared folders then re-share them.
This idea is because of that green bar. I think it means that the 20H2 computer is looking for shared folders but simply not finding any.

    3 Search
Yes, I still miss the loss of the blue keywords & the helpful dropdowns in File explorer searching. I use a third party utility a lot more these days.
    - Simple search for files containing the word elephant - File explorer search
    - Anything else - NirSoft's SearchMyFiles

    All the best,
    Denis

Networking- believe I've tried that, just did it again to be sure. Same result.

    Troubleshooter reports
Your computer appears to be correctly configured, but the device or resource (PC-SPECIAL) is not responding

PC-SPECIAL is the one with 1903.

Sorry I couldn't help. I've had too few networking faults of my own.

I assume that the accounts that were originally used to authorize network access are still in existence & still using the same passwords.

    Best of luck,

Exactly so, unchanged. As I said, it seems I'm down to more arcane things.. I have a page I found with some, but it's a matter of deciding whether it's worth my time... networking on Win 10 is a consumer disaster in terms of inconvenience in configuring.

There have been some other reports of problems after upgrading - no idea if there's any consistent pattern.

    Thanks anyway.

Have discovered - thanks to this thread-
Possible to disable the large icon over pointer when dragging files?

that modifying a theme and saving it in Settings (I don't mean downloading one necessarily) can result in this happening.

Simply by selecting a Windows 10 theme (bottom right) instead of the one I've used for some years returns the translucent overlay when dragging a file.
Opaque rectangle when dragging and dropping - can't see target - 20H2-1.png

Note that with the original theme I still had this problem even in Safe Mode.

Now I need to do a bit of work to see if I can achieve the same appearance again with 20H2 as in 1903 by saving a new theme including the same minor change - and indeed that wasn't too hard.

I am glad you have discovered the solution. I would never have thought of the theme as the cause.

    All the best,
