I've forgotten everything I ever knew about copy protection on DVDs. (BluRay disks and UHD BluRays use versions of HDCP, a uniform standard, unlike DVDs.)

You may have difficulty finding a free player that plays copy protected DVDs. This one may work: https://www.winxdvd.com/dvd-player/?AFFILIATE=120043 It's free. As far as I know, the main bad thing about the software is that it'll constantly try to sell you other software from the same company.

I started to install it but Windows Defender set out alert. I quit there. Now I am having trouble uninstalling it. The pop up keeps saying it still running,
Uninstall and Remove WinX DVD Ripper Platinum Step by Step,
Even though it still appears in the start menu it seems like it is gone?
I am giving up on this. Too many headaches without any resolution.
Will stand alone players with a USB out eliminate this snag? Look like they are almost dirt cheap?

    ...........................................
I was wrong. I shut down and restarted and I am still stuck with this awful app. Hard to say how long it will take me to sort this out.

The link I posted was not to "WinX DVD Ripper Platinum". It was to the WinX DVD Player application. Did you get the Ripper instead?

I tested the Player before posting the link. It didn't generate any Windows Defender warnings. It installed and uninstalled normally, and left very little behind.

I tried WinX DVD Ripper Platinum as an experiment. It, too, seems to be a well-behaved program. If you had issues with it, that's a mystery to me.

As an extra layer of security, I ran Malwarebytes after uninstalling the apps. No detections. If either app did anything sinister, it's more subtle than either Malwarebytes or Windows Defender could detect.

I hope that you can get yous sytem cleaned.

Are you saying WinX is still there? Is so try to remove it with Revo.

    Revo Uninstaller Free
Download Revo Uninstaller Free - Remove unwanted programs easily

Are you sure your DVD drive is not broken? If this is a desktop have you checked the power & SATA cables for it?

Do you have any non-video DVDs or CDs to try with the drive?

If you have a blank DVD you could test the drive by burning something to it.

Yes! it still there. I ran Revvo and got the same stall-the 5K player is running. Close it to continue but nothing on the surface works.

I have picked up another bug that will not go away Wondershare.

[OFFICIAL] Wondershare UniConverter | All-in-one Video Converter, Compressor, Burner

Neither appear in the Task Manager or list of installed apps.

I use the drive for audio files and it works fine on playback and burning.

What's an ol' dumb fellow like me to do?

You probably remember that copy protected DVDs use the Content Scramble System (CSS), and VLC uses libdvdcss so it can play them...

You could install a trial version of Revo Uninstaller Pro. Unlike Revo Uninstaller Free it has a Forced Uninstall option.

If that doesn't work you could boot into Safe Mode and try to remove it there.

What I would do is manually uninstall the player. You might have to use Task Manager to stop some active tasks first.

I'd probably follow up with a conservative Registry cleaner like the one in CCleaner. (Potentially dangerous, but I've used it for years without a single incident. I suppose that I shouldn't admit that.)

I wish that I had some idea how things got into their current state. As far as I know, you're not dealing with rogue software.

Use Hunter Mode from Revo Uninstaller. Go to C:\Program Files or C:\Program Files (x86) and put the Bullseye icon on the .exe of the program.
Also look in C:\Users\[UserName]\AppData\Roaming appdata is a Hidden file. and AppData\Local for the app you want to uninstall if it isn't in the other locations.
