    Cannot play DVD

I have not tried to play a DVD in ages.
First I tried my VLC instance. That sunk.
    Same for Windows Media.

What seemed like solutions turned out to be hawking for other app.
    I uninstalled them.
    Vexing.

I finally got a player to work.
MPC-BE Media Player Classic - BE
I took it from this page:
11 Best And Free Media Players For Windows 10 PC (2021 Edition)

When I went to play a DVD from the public library it thew a copy protected error.

    What am I to do?

Go to ---videohelp.com---and "investigate" ---dvd shrink--- and ---dvd decrypter----.
The site is completely safe and so are the investigated,if downloaded from there.

    Mike,

I have not heard of anybody having a problem playing DVDs with VLC before.
1 Perhaps you could try installing it again.
2 Test whether or not the problem DVD from the library plays in a conventional standalone DVD Player [assuming that you know somebody who still has one] rather than a computer's DVD drive.

It is uncommon for a DVD to refuse to play in any given player but not unknown.
    - Of the couple of hundred DVDs I had there was one that would play in my computer's DVD drive but not in my standalone DVD player.
    - I also had one that would play in black & white in my standalone DVD player but would play properly in colour in my computer's DVD drive.

    Best of luck,
    Denis

I reinstalled VLC and updated it. When I called the DVD it threw an error of some sort. Then I installed Wondershare and converted the codec. It was clumsy getting it started. I could not not get rid of the bright white borders making dark scenes difficult to follow. I watched about 80% of the video then it crashed. I could not get it restarted. I did not try to go any further because I was not enjoying the movie. Maybe something is wrong with the DVD? The complexity to get it running seems like there is some sort of misfit with the DVD? I am uninstalling the codec convertor. Same for VLC. The fonts and color scheme in VLC even at 175% zoom made matters worse. I had to use a hand magnifier to see text. I am not able to take the first steps for a low vision format.
Not sure where to go from here. There must be a better way?

"big movie" really makes me miffed, at least sometimes, they apparently threatened to perm-ban PC optical drives!

From the install menu which options should I choose?
I used the default settings but they are not working.
The app sees my DVD but just spins endlessly.

    ......
Later. I uninstalled and starter over checking the three associates with boxes.
Same problem. Freezes and require closing in task manager.

Again there must be a reason for this and a simpler method?

Is it a DVD or a Blue Ray Disk? If it's a DVD have you tried playing a different DVD?

Good point. It says DVD on the case.

I think I may have a DVD somewhere in one of my stashes but it would take some time to locate it.

This is the title of the DVD The Big Lebowski. A friend wanted me to have a look.

It looks like it was made nine years ago so likely nothing fancy in the printing?

Looking for it om YouTube suggests that the issue that I have been fighting lies in the codec / copyright?
