The option will only be there if you boot the computer from Macrium Reflect Rescue Drive (either USB flash drive or the boot menu option).
Just would like to say thank you, clone done and checked and used Macrium to erase the the original HDD, your advise was much appreciated.

I would like to say thank you to everyone who helped me on this project/thread.

A few false starts and a couple of surprises.

New cloned OS SSD installed and the original HDD installed in the optical drive. From press of power button to desk top is blisteringly fast, 11 seconds, admittedly there is little on it save for the OS, no doubt that will change in time, still for an old LT I don't think that's to bad.

Re-soldering the loose USB port was fiddly which required the removal of the Mobo but at least it wasn't a broken board and the actual teardown was painless but there were plenty of YT videos for the HP Pavilion 15P to explain and guide me.

Almost scuppered at the start, on removing the optical drive bay there are 3 of the flattest, cross type screws heads and my usual kit of SD bits had nothing to fit, had to break out my nuke box to resolve this, would dearly like to know what type of screw, size they are but after that it were all plain sailing.

Couple of surprises, when trying to change boot order in the BIOS, in fact change anything, an administration pass word was required, GD swears she never set one and after three attempts to gain access, system locks down with a small window to contact HP support for code. Initially HP were of no help informing me I had to buy a new board and they couldn't help or wouldn't.

Anyhows, some patience, knowing when insistence creates a brick wall, a couple of further phone calls and some blagging, they gave me a code to try and I was in.

Apparently, if the web is to go by, HP do set these administration passwords to prevent consumers making changes which is sneaky and unpleasant.

I will boot LT over the next few days make sure it is all stable but I suspect one little girl is going to be very happy with their LT.

    Thank you all.

My first thought was, why use Optical Drive! That extra HDD will use more power and make the LT hotter. I would have just gotten a low profile USB Flash Drive, Samsun and Sandisk both make very nice low profile flash drives. But looks like you are very resourceful and got it all fixed up for her.

    Hi,

But it won't use any more power when used as original HDD with the OS on it, swapping it to the optical drive shouldn't make it any hotter--should it?

And in place of it, running along side is a Samsung + SSD with the OS installed.

It's my GDs and she is giving it to her best friends little sister, a few quid, some time, a couple of repairs and help off these forums, it seemed like a good solution.

Yes, but now you have the heat -albeit not that much extra- of two drives running. Sure the SSD don't put out much heat, but a little. Probably okay for the child, but I don't want extra heat, even a few degree's in a laptop may make it closer to T-Junction

It's fine really, but would not have been my choice for my personal computer.

@Jaylob4, I have done many upgrades to old laptops like the one you intent to do (Add a small SSD for Windows and programs and replace the ODD with the HDD to be used to store data). Works great.
    This is a 12 years old HP laptop with a 120G SSD and a 1 T HDD.

    - A 5-6 years old HP Pavilion 15p Note Book probably came with Win 10, maybe Win 8.x.
    - Windows 10 build 15063 (also known as the Creators Update or version 1703) is from March 2017.
    - Normally a School computer has Win 10 Education (special license) but yours is Win 10 Home. It's probably configured by the school to be hacker proof. As it has an activated Win 10 Home the computer has a "Digital License".

I suggest you build the USB Win 10 22h2 installation drive using MCT

I suggest you replace the HDD by the small SSD and do a clean install. (don't replace the ODD with the HDD now).
If it came with Win 8.x or Win 10 the type (home or pro) is engraved on BIOS and it will install without asking to select a version.
I would say it will install without issue and will activate.

Windows can be installed in two ways: Legacy-MBR or UEFI-GPT
To install as Legacy-MBR you must boot the installation drive as Legacy
To install as UEFI-GPT you must boot the installation drive as UEFI.

If you have a UEFI BIOS, you should install as UEFI-GPT
Detach any other drives (SATA or Power cable) from the MB.

During POST, press F12(?) to launch the boot menu. You will see two options for the USB drive. USB UEFI (Name) and USB (Name). Select USB UEFI (Name) if you want to install as UEFI-GPT or select USB (name) if you want to install as Legacy-MBR.
Go to install and delete ALL partitions on the main drive till you have one and only one unallocated space and then proceed.
If you don't want to use MS account, don't enable updates or connect to the internet during installation.

My two laptops and my desktop have a small SSD (120G) and a HDD. The main reason was that, when I bought the SSD, it was costing around 1 $USD per GB. Nowadays you buy a 1TB SSD for less than US$ 35.

If you wish to install a small SSD and use the HHD for data it's very easy and I suggest you move C:\users (SSD) to D:\Users (HDD) using Kari tutorial. I have all the configuration files and CMDs and I can guide you on it.
