Just would like to say thank you, clone done and checked and used Macrium to erase the the original HDD, your advise was much appreciated.

I would like to say thank you to everyone who helped me on this project/thread.
A few false starts and a couple of surprises.
New cloned OS SSD installed and the original HDD installed in the optical drive. From press of power button to desk top is blisteringly fast, 11 seconds, admittedly there is little on it save for the OS, no doubt that will change in time, still for an old LT I don't think that's to bad.
Re-soldering the loose USB port was fiddly which required the removal of the Mobo but at least it wasn't a broken board and the actual teardown was painless but there were plenty of YT videos for the HP Pavilion 15P to explain and guide me.
Almost scuppered at the start, on removing the optical drive bay there are 3 of the flattest, cross type screws heads and my usual kit of SD bits had nothing to fit, had to break out my nuke box to resolve this, would dearly like to know what type of screw, size they are but after that it were all plain sailing.
Couple of surprises, when trying to change boot order in the BIOS, in fact change anything, an administration pass word was required, GD swears she never set one and after three attempts to gain access, system locks down with a small window to contact HP support for code. Initially HP were of no help informing me I had to buy a new board and they couldn't help or wouldn't.
Anyhows, some patience, knowing when insistence creates a brick wall, a couple of further phone calls and some blagging, they gave me a code to try and I was in.
Apparently, if the web is to go by, HP do set these administration passwords to prevent consumers making changes which is sneaky and unpleasant.
I will boot LT over the next few days make sure it is all stable but I suspect one little girl is going to be very happy with their LT.
