I knew that I was doing something incorrectly. I did try to get to the desktop the way that I was doing it, but all it would allow me to do was to save the notepad / file.

So when I get to that step, and the notepad opens I the select open not type it into the notepad and go from there. Thanks so Very Much for clearing that up for me.
As I said, I just knew that it was going to be something that I was going to want to kick myself for afterwards and it was - lol.

Thank You so Very Very Much for clearing that up for me. You have no idea how much I was driving myself nuts just knowing that I was reading the steps incorrectly.

I am still going to try this tomorrow morning when I turn on the computer - just because I want to make sure I know what I am doing in a situation like this.

Also, I know that right now the issue with that file is gone, but it was gone once before and then it suddenly reappeared on my desktop after doing some other things and then turning my computer back on.

This way, if it is back, I will be able to follow the steps you have given me to get rid of that file.

Since you are going to be experimenting, you might like to try this.
- If I have had to use the InstallUSB's Command prompt, it has generally been to rescue a file as a preparation for repairs or reinstalling Windows because, say, Windows has been refusing to boot.
- In these circumstances I have found it useful to have Notepad running twice over so that I can browse in one Notepad window to the HDD I've connected to copy files to and I can browse in the other to the folder I want to rescue a file from.

Note that you can also do all this when running Windows normally so you can practice the procedure before going to the hassle of booting from the InstallUSB.

1 In the Command prompt, enter

Code:

Notepad

then press WinKey-LeftArrow to move the window to the left half of the screen
and now, in the Command prompt, enter

Code:

Notepad

again then press WinKey-RightArrow to move the second window to the right half of the screen.

2 In the left-hand Notepad window,
- Click on the File menu,
- select Open
- set Files of type to All files
- click on ThisPC
- browse to whatever external drive has been connected to copy the files to,
- browse around that drive a bit just to double-check that it is the intended drive by looking at what's already on it [because drive letters may not the same as normal].

3 In the right-hand Notepad window,
- Click on the File menu,
- select Open
- set Files of type to All files
- click on ThisPC
- browse to the internal drive that you are trying to rescue files from - this will generally be the drive with Windows on it
- browse around that drive a bit just to double-check that it is the intended drive by looking at what's already on it [because drive letters may not the same as normal].

4.1 In the right-hand window, find a folder/file that you want to rescue then use right-click Copy or Ctrl-C.
4.2 In the left-hand window, check you are displaying the intended destination folder and click in it to make sure you have selected this window then paste the folder/file into it using right-click Paste or Ctrl-V.

5 Make careful notes about what you have done because you might not do it again for years and you are likely to be stressed when you try again because you have a serious Windows problem at the time.

Wow - Thanks So Very Much!

I just knew that it was going to be something so simple, that I was not reading the steps correctly and that I was going to want to kick myself once I realize what I was - or was not doing and I was doing just that this morning.

It was so easy to get to the desktop from the steps that you gave - once I actually looked at the screen itself instead of just typing the information into notepad. Now I feel really silly!

Also, thanks for all that other information on steps to do while experimenting both from the InstallUSB's Command prompt as well as the fact that I can experiment with that while running windows as well.

I know that I have already said it ~ but I honestly can not thank you enough for all the assistance and patience in getting me to understand how to do this as well as resolve my issue.
