If links are erratic, try e.g. Free Downloader which can help to deal with that.
There will be other places you can download from as you say.. and there are plenty of live boot disks... having one with Hard Disk Sentinel or Crystal Diskinfo on them is handy.
And of course, recovering data from a disk can then be done easily.

In this specific case where acer tc-120 crashed and ms tools were not able to repair, issue was solved as follows:
1. booted on macrium rescue usb and performed fixboot.
2. after this PC still did not come up on hd.
3. but I got an interesting error message saying that system file “mfeelamk.sys” was corrupted (related to mcafee).
4. then I downloaded the corr. file and replaced the corrupted one with the correct one.
5. after this PC came up ok on hd.
So conclusion here is that in this case root cause of error message:
“Automatic Repair couldn’t repair your PC. Press “Advanced options” to try other options to repair your PC or “Shut down” to turn off your PC. Log file: C:\WINDOWS\System32\Logfiles\Srt\SrtTrail.txt.”
is that macrium reflect fix boot gave the hint to locate corrupted driver, in this case “ mfeelamk.sys” of mcafee.

Now you have a working system, secure it by starting a regular routine of disk imaging - e.g. using Macrium Reflect (free).
Also consider creating a restore point on a daily schedule, as these are created irregularly by Win 10 (Tutorial available).
