    This PC icon won't open

Brand new Dell Inspiron 17 3793 with Windows 10 Home Build 19042. I have set up my User account and transferred all my files from the old laptop. Suddenly, I cannot get This PC icon on the home screen to open. It flashes an empty This PC screen for just a second, then goes back to the home screen. All other icons work, including Windows Explorer, Recycle, etc.. I can enter C: in the search bar on the home screen to see what is on the C drive, or D: to see what is on the external drive, but I don't understand why This PC is not working. I have searched everywhere and cannot find anything directly related to this issue...so any help is appreciated.

Hi, you might try removing and recreating it:
Add or Remove Default Desktop Icons in Windows 10

It's possible some rt click option has been added to it that is incompatible.
What happens if you right click it?

Have you installed some programs that may have added a context menu to it?

You should be able to see its context menu entries using e.g. Shellexview (free) (look to the right)

Thank you for the reply. Here are the things I have tried so far....
    1. Deleted and reapplied the optional desktop icons
    2. Right Click gives the usual Open, Pin, Manage, Properties, etc. options...looked at all for hints of issue.
    3. Not sure what is meant by a context menu added....but no unsual programs have been installed.
    4. Will take a look at the Shellexview utility to view context menu issue....but not sure what I'm looking for....will get back.
    5. Continuing with what I have tried...created a Test User Account...same issue with This PC icon.
    6. Started up in Safe Mode....same issue.

OK, dalchina...I ran the Shellexview and have a long list of entries similar to the list in your reply. Can you help me with what to look for that may be contributing to the issue? Thanks.

    Hi, good diagnostic steps.

You're looking for anything listed in the right column under 'My Computer'

However it's interesting that rt click doesn't crash anything, so may well not be a context menu entry anyway.

That said, can you post a screenshot of its context menu anyway?

(You can add items to the context menu shown when you right click something in a variety of ways- by installing programs that do so, or by creating them yourself).

Try opening a command prompt, then running

    explorer shell:::{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}

This should open This PC in file explorer

Ugh! I have a feeling that did not work. I can't see how to "attach" the screenshot like you did. Sorry...can you help?

I have a screenshot of Shellexview but cannot see how to attach it to my post as you did earlier. Can you help?

Tried running the Command Prompt suggestion, and I get the same results as with This PC icon....it opens briefly with a blank page, then immediately closes.

Does This PC open ok if you open file explorer and click it in the Nav pane?

You could delete it and replace it with this:
Create This PC Shortcut in Windows 10

I believe the context menu for that is not identical though.

Or simply open file explorer, rt click This PC in the nav. pane and drag to the desktop and create a shortcut.

    - or just use the icon I showed you.

If you look at your Reliability History, does the crash report show anything useful?

    This PC icon won't open

I tried the This PC zip file download, and it extracted and created a new This PC icon...but it yields the same result...opens briefly (blank page) then closes. I had already tried the Method 2 by creating a new shortcut with the script inside...same result. Something had to change, but I don't have a clue what could have happened. Do you think a Windows Repair might help? Was the Shellexview attachment post of any help?

    You said

    - do you have a restore point you can use?

The thing about that screenshot is there's a scroll bar- the list is much longer than you showed.

All you're interested in is any non-MS ones that appear in the column for 'My computer'. Ensure the hide option is set.

Don't post the whole list- you can simply state there are none if that's so, else post just ones that are, or simply try disabling them in Shellexview (rt click, click disable, or select, and click little red button). No need to restart etc.
