[SOLVED] Some W10 20H2 changes by MS and their drawbacks

Installed 20H2 a few days ago and still struggling with some very silly changes by MS.

    1. I use Textpad to edit my batch files which is my default Windows text editor. But, it only allows me to choose from the Microsoft store. How can I override this? In the registry perhaps?

2 The Start page tiles are all gray tiles on a black background. Is there a way I can set different colors for the tiles.

You can download TextPAD from here TextPad downloads
You also have to use a 3rd party app to change the color of tiles How to change the color of each tile in Windows 10 start screen | TechinABC

Thanks for the links. I own and use TextPad since 2006, but, can't assign it to edit bat. files, or set it as my default text editor in Windows. Opening an app by the file extension only points to the Microsoft store.

Unfortunately, it no longer works with Windows 10 20H2. It's a Windows Club app written in 2015 for Windows 8.1.

Install the latest version of the app. You may have to uninstall your old version and restart the computer first.

Just about any app will work in Windows 10 in Compatibility mode.

Setting programs e.g. portable programs or ones that aren't written so as to register themselves as potentially capable of handling a file type as default can be accomplished by

    a. Rt click file of type, Open with, and following all the way through the options to browse to a program of your choice, remembering to click the box at the bottom to set it as default (See relevant tutorial).

Choose Default Apps in Windows 10
    e.g. option 2

    b. Use the excellent free program 'Default Programs Editor'

If a shortcut to Textpad functioins a drop-target, you can place a shortcut to it in your shell:SnedTo folder. Then it's available to all file types in the context menu.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions.

    1. To clarify, there is no problem my listing TextPad, or any other app in the context menu. For that I can use Easy Context Menu Editor.

I am referring to the Property page of a file. I can no longer change the app association as it was possible previously. This also changed the file icon to the Textpad icon.

    2. The Tile Color Changer in ANY compatibility mode (8, 10) goes through the motions, I select color and save, it then tells me to view the start page, tile. But, the color doesn't change. It remains the same charcoal black.

No idea what this means. You appear to be asking something quite different to your first question.

Screenshot to illustrate? Or wait for someone who does understand.
