    Laptop freezing needing restart

It just gets totally frozen and need to restart, happening now and then randomly, usually when I have many things open.

I have a M.2 SSD with 100% optimal performance but 39% Health as says the Hard Disk Sentinel test.

12 GB RAM, Ryzen 5 2500... quite new yet.

    Any idea?

Hola kmint and welcome to TF ,

I would be shopping for a new SSD and backing up all important files now. Monitor the drive health daily. How old is it?

You can also try Crystal Disk Info and see what it reports from SSD health. How old/new is the SSD?

You have an Integrated graphics card, which helps itself to the system memory, unlike a dedicated card which has its own memory.
In extremely high usage situations,e.g. video file manipulation, this can cause available memory to be completely used and this then triggers Timeout Detection and Recovery [TDR] to temporarily stop sending to the monitor.
In your situation, having too many programmes running simultaneously is not helpful.
Reduce system memory usage, try a dedicated card or increase memory.

    Hola muchas gracias :).

It's like 1 year old and the health goes down very fast probably because I have some partitions and I always have eMule and uTorrent running with lots of download and upload. What is sfc and dism? I'm not expert in computers.

I just bought this Kingston M.2 what do you think? Kingston A2000 (SA2000M8/250G) SSD NVMe PCIe M.2 2280 250 GB: Amazon.es: Informatica

I'll run memtest86+, does it help at all to see its health?

The article I linked has a good explanation of sfc and dism. You can also read this tutorial: Use DISM to Repair Windows 10 Image

Run the commands as described in the tutorial to check for any Windows installation problems. I run it periodically on all my PCs.

My experience is only with Samsung SSDs. The Kingston has good ratings, so should be fine:

Can you please describe what you mean by many things open? I think you should be able to have many things open. The problem will hopefully be fixed with your new SSD.

Please confirm you have the paging file set to system managed:

When are you expecting new SSD to arrive?

I would do the MemTest86+ to rule out any RAM issues. Run it for at least 8 passes - that's the suggestion I've seen recommended anyway.

"MemTest86+ has been known to discover errors in RAM in later passes than the eighth pass. This is for information only; if you feel there is a definite problem with the RAM and 8 passes have shown no errors feel free to continue for longer.

Running 8 passes of MemTest86+ is a long and drawn out exercise and the more RAM you have the longer it will take. It's recommended to run MemTest86+ just before you go to bed and leave it overnight."

    Hello @kmint,

sfc is a Windows utility program for detecting and repairing any corruptions in the protected system files of the OS. If any files are missing or corrupted, they are replaced from the cached copy which is located in the compressed folder %WinDir%\System32\dllcache.

Both the below will check your OS to see if everything is running OK and there are NO corruptions or violations.

     SFC and RestoreHealth

[1] Press the Win + X keys together > Command Prompt (Admin).
[2] Highlight ALL the commands below.

    IMPORTANT:

    • It is recommended when running SFC that Fast Startup is turned OFF [ Turn it back ON when finished ] => How to Turn On or Off Fast Startup in Windows 10

    • If SFC finds any ERRORS that it can NOT repair, run SFC again upto 3 more times, Restarting after each to allow any pending actions to be implemented.

    • DISM will initially try and Repair ANY Corrupted or Missing files using the Component Store.
If this is NOT possible, DISM will use Windows Update. Therefore, Internet access is required.
If you are NOT connected to the Internet, you will receive a Error: 0x800f081f.

[3] Press the Ctrl + C keys together.
[4] Right-click inside the Administrator: Command Prompt Window > Paste.
    [5] Press Enter.

    Code:

    sfc /scannow
    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
    sfc /scannow

    • When the above has finished processing . . .

[6] Right-click on the title bar of the Administrator: Command Prompt Window > Edit > Select All.
[7] Right-click on the title bar of the Administrator: Command Prompt Window again > Edit > Copy.

    • Paste the results into your post using the [CODE] tags . . .

[8] In your post, click the Hashtag icon #.
[9] Click INSIDE the [CODE]Here[CODE] tags and press the Ctrl + V keys together.

    • In your post it will look like this . . .

    Code:

    <<< Results here >>>

     SFC Error Report

However, if there are STILL SFC ERRORS . . .

[1] Press the Win + X keys together > Command Prompt (Admin).
    [2] Highlight the command below.

    NOTE:

If you have a Relocated Desktop, then change the %UserProfile% part of the Command below to the actual path of the Relocated Desktop folder.

[3] Press the Ctrl + C keys together.
[4] Right-click inside the Administrator: Command Prompt Window > Paste.
    [5] Press Enter.

    Code:

    findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log > "%UserProfile%\Desktop\SFC_Details.log"

    • This will create a SFC_Details.log file on the Desktop.

    EITHER:

Copy & Paste the results into your post using the [CODE] tags . . .

[1] Open the SFC_Details.log file in Notepad.
[2] Press the Ctrl + A keys together.
[3] Press the Ctrl + C keys together.
[4] In your post, click the Hashtag icon #.
[5] Click INSIDE the [CODE]Here[CODE] tags and press the Ctrl + V keys together.

    • In your post it will look like this . . .

    Code:

    <<< Results Here >>>

    OR:

UPLOAD the file => How to Upload and Post Screenshots and Files at Ten Forums.

    I hope this helps.

    @Paul Black @jmatt @steve108

    Thanks a lot!

I'll do everything you suggest but it's going to take time to understand all the instructions, it's advanced knowledge.

Last night I tried to leave the laptop running the memtest86+ but I really don't know what I did.

I installed it in a pendrive and tried to boot from it. However the booting menu was totally new to me, I had never seen such a menu but it offered me options to run a disk test and a memory test, I run both (1 hour long the second) and apparently nothing is wrong.

Now, I don't know if I run the memtest86+ or a test in my BIOS or UEFI (I really don't bloody understand what those things are).

So tonight I will try again to run the memtest86+ if I can ever find it. I even forgot how to boot to the boot menu... pressing esc, del or F2... I don't even remember...

Then I will go with your suggestions which might take some time for me to understand that chinese language... :)

@steve108 when I say it freezes with heavy usage it's because it tends to freeze (needing restart) when I have many things running, for instance I usually have eMule and uTorrent with many files uploading and downloading, also three or four browsers with lots of tabs open at the same time, I always have open Chrome and TOR at least, with lots of tabs each, easily 30 on each, but many times also open Firefox and Opera. Having the four open together is very usual. Additionally I am frequently sending movies to the TV via VLC and Chromecast. And frequently I have music or radio on or I am processing videos with Handbrake.

This laptop is wonderful, superfast and with 12GB RAM I can have everything I want open, but sometimes those freezings occur.

Now, the doubt is that the freezings may happen when I dont have so much stuff running and then I hesitate about what is happening...

Thanks a lot for your help.

*By the way, I am reading about the history of Spanish Texas and it was totally empty when we lost it in 1821, only 20.000 inhabitants in the whole Texas which is huge (50% larger than Spain), imagine how empty it was. We had only 30.000 inhabitants in Florida in 1821 too, I wonder how there is yet some Spanish cultural heritage over there after 200 years. How sad we didn't find the oil as James Dean and Rock Hudson did We might be rich, lol. (Sorry for this off-topic) :)
