Windows 10 Pro boot/power off/restart really slow

Hello everyone,

it has been months my laptop started to be really.... really slow, every time I sign off, restart or switch on. It takes like twenty minutes to switch off, and even more to restart. When I switch it on, booting takes about twenty minutes (rough, I didn't time it) and then once I signed in Windows, it takes something like an hour on the Windows "Welcome" page and even desktop loading is slow. Once it has done, everything else is fine.

My laptop is: ASUS X556U
CPU: Intel core i7-6500U 2.50GHz 2.59GHz
RAM: 8GB
OS: Windows10 pro 2004 version x64


This is what I've already tried so far, but unsuccessfully:
- Windows updates checks (everything updated)
- Fast boot disabled
- Hard Drive scanning (no problems found)
- chkdsk and sfc/ scannow (scannow found some problems and fixed them)
- start apps turned off

Your specs have excluded your drive. HDD? SDD? etc..

Please assess your disk data transfer rate by capturing a screenshot like this whilst copying a large file from C to C:


Please also run Crystal Diskmark (free) to assess performance. A few examples here for comparison:

How much free space do you have on C: ?

Have you ever adjusted the paging parameters?


When performance was ok, were you running a different Win 10 build?

Have you used any driver updater tools?

Laptop seems to be from around 2016- is that correct?

- My HDD is ST1000LM048-2E7172.
- I weren't running a different Win 10 build as far I know. And didn't use any driver updater tool for sure.
- My laptop is from 2017.
- I've never adjust paging parameters.
- I was always thinking that I didn't try to delete Windows/Temp and AppData/Temp files

That's a Seagate Barracuda 1Tb disk.

Having established some basics, zbook's post on using MS's Performance Recorder (technical, provides graphical representation of e.g. the boot process and how time is used during that).

Perhaps only 1 or 2 members here are particularly conversant with it.

free space: 490GB on 826GB

I also did another crystal hard disk check at maximum test size:




So do you think it is due to my hard-drive? I supposed that the problem was due to some OS update or register file corrupted. I also did disk check and defrag some weeks ago and both went fine.

When available please update the progress with post #3.

Hi zBook, I have almost done what you asked for. It is taking ages because WPR is rebooting my laptop several times (twice already) and as you know it takes really long time. Now is processing the second reboot information, I hope it is last one. I am going to post the files here as it's completed. Thanks.
