It's often the way - a company sells something at cost or cheaply but then makes a fortune on accessories / other services.

For example if BMW was a banking company they would be one of the World's biggest banks -- they make more money from their finance division (by far) than actually flogging their cars !!!.

In fact Ms could probably afford to give away Windows 10 these days and their corporate income would be so little effected -- Windows probably costs them less than thier petty cash boxes.

You can still update from W7/W8/W8.1 for free !!! if you have the qualifying product nrs.

I can see a time when Windows 10 OS (Operating Service) will be free in the future.

Likely it's not all about money directly, unlike previous versions of Windows:
- People can't stop updating their OS (most people don't at least)
- Gathering feedback increased a lot (referred as "spyware")

The point is, fixing bugs and holes become easier and leads to more secure and stable system (close to linux), since linux still slightly dominates servers that we all visit.

IMO, in the long run it's not only about taking over a share of profits of google or apple, but also to increase sale of server editions.

This guy is genius.

I just saw a mention of "Windows 11" in another thread and thought what? I assume it's common knowledge now and being publicised.

There will be a Windows 11 and it’s coming this month | T3

My first thoughts are - I really hate that reversed window! It just looks back to front and on the wrong side of the screen (where you put your shortcut icons!).
