I’m still trying to work out what I think about the wallpaper. It’s eye catching but I keep looking at it thinking - what is it. One minute it’s a grotesque and alien like blue amoeba, the next minute it’s - artistic but do I want to look at that. Then I think - weird.

There should be a period of active support AND extended maintenance support even after the new OS is released. And it is not at all guaranteed that they will release the final version at the 24th. It might as well just be a beta.

But anyhow, at this point it is not clear to me which one of these support categories that 2024 date is.

I believe we would continue to get feature updates until a date between today and that 2024 date. Like one to two years. At least one more large feature update is due, since we were insider dev-testing 21xxx builds, while the public release is 19xxx. This is slated to 2021 Fall, or even Winter I believe, according to the previous schedule.

Beyond this, highly unlikely I guess. This is what happened with Vista, Win7 and even 8.1. The successor OS got released, the previous ones were fully supported with feature & performance improvement updates for about 2-3 more years AT MOST and then moved into extended support, which means security updates only.

So this boils down to, in my speculation:
Windows 10 Active support: until 2022 December
Windows 10 Extended support: until 2024
Windows 10 ESU paid support: beyond 2024

I have the same questions as you, but I'm just going to wait for the official answers to come from Microsoft ......... I'm sure there will be many speculations, guesses, and leaks between now and then

I'm hoping Windows 11 will be a free upgrade, for home users anyway, and hope we will be able to upgrade over Window 10 without any loss of apps or file like in the past. We'll find out for sure next week on the 24th I hope.
