    Microsoft Windows Stopped Working

    Hey all!

    Just writing in regards to my little brothers laptop.

    He has a Aspire E15 - E5 - 575G - 50MF

    He told me as he was using it, the laptop would become incredibly slow and unresponsive. I had a look, basically you could move the mouse and everything but you couldn't do anything, click on anything and ctrl + alt + del would not work.

    Until eventually a message came up along the lines of "Microsoft Windows" has stopped working, and it was basically stuck, so I had to force shutdown the laptop.

    Restarted it, loading into windows took a long while but it eventually loaded in all fine. It very slow despite not much happening in task manager.

    I remember this happened once before a really long time ago and I had to reformat and jump through a whole bunch of loops, it was very frustrating.

    What kind of tests or procedures could I run to help determine the issue or figure out what's happening. Something tells me bloody windows went and installed updates into some random place and the files are all stuffed around.

    Thank you :)

    Run a repair install on it.

    If it`s a hard drive, defrag it.

    Before you try anything, check the drive's health. A failing HDD could cause those symptoms. You can read the drive's SMART data with something like CrystalDiskInfo. Any raw value above zero for Reallocated Sector Count, Pending Sector Count, or read errors is an indication the drive may be failing.

    CrystalDiskInfo Portable (disk health monitoring) | PortableApps.com

    Assuming the disk is healthy a repair install could help. But before that you could usefully try SFC /ScanNow in an admin command prompt, followed by DISM's RestoreHealth option if SFC found things it could not fix.

    Run SFC Command in Windows 10
    Use DISM to Repair Windows 10 Image

    If the problem persists after running the above, then try the repair install.

    Not sure if any red flags there.

    Going to try a SFC scan now.

    Edit: Got "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations."

    @AddRAM

    Going to try the repair lucky last, thanks :)

    I would suggest sfc and dism followed by a full virus scan first before a repair install.

    @steve108

    sfc and dism went all fine, windows updated and needed to restart, as I did it is currently now going through a c drive repair, took a long while but its on "attempting repairs". How bad does the harddrive look though? Is it more learning towards windows or bad HD?

    Thanks :)

    Have you done a backup of the bad drive? That might be a good idea at this time as it seems the drive is on its way to digital heaven.

    Guess you didn't learn anything from your bad drive experience

    I just wasnt sure if this was a windows file issue or the harddrive, the laptop isn't anywhere near as old as my other hard drive aha, also I don't really understand the stats on the SMART interface.
