I tried to reset my laptop and now it doesn't work

Right now I'm on an HP Envy 17 Touchsmart Notebook that originally came with Windows 8 but I did a clean install from the Bootable USB drive created by the MCT/Media Creation Tool process. I don't simply copy an .iso file to a USB except for transporting. There are other processes that can create the bootable USB but I've not had issues with the MCT. The downloaded .iso file can be used to burn a bootable DVD copy of the original disc but must be able to hold it, over 3GB and maybe over 4GB, x64/64-bit is larger than x86/32-bit.

That will only work with the repair mode.



Create a Win 10 bootable USB with Windows Media Creation Tool (i.e. a free download of Windows 10)

Then you may need to consult your manual (or online guide) to change the boot sequence to recognise the USB stick first, before the HDD in the device. This might be achievable with a single F(unction) key during the boot process, or you may have to go into the BIOS to change the boot sequence.

Then once you Boot and get to the Command Prompt, type diskmgmt.msc press Enter. Take a picture with a camera for example and post the results.

I'm using a memory stick that I created a while back and used successfully on another machine.
I've found that starting up whilst repeatedly pressing F9 brings up the boot menu.
It gives me the options "OS boot manager (UEFI)" which it was set to by default,
and "Boot from EFI file."
Should I insert the memory stick and switch to the latter?

Okay, the UEFI option in the boot menu didn't change anything so I continued investigating the function keys and found that F11 brought up a recovery menu that permitted me to boot from the memory stick. After choosing language and accepting T&Cs, it gave me the option of install and keep files, or install only. Selecting the former gave me an error message "not available," so I selected the latter.

It's now asking me where to install and shows:
Drive0 Partition1: SYSTEM 260.0/187.0 Mb System
Drive0 Partition2: 160.0/160.0 Mb (reserved)
Drive0 Partition3: Windows 223.8/190.6 Gb (Primary)
Drive0 Partition4: 1017.0/469.0 Mb (recovery)
Drive0 Partition5: RECOVERY 13.4/13.4 Gb OEM (Reserved)

Since it has highlighted Drive0 Partition3 I selected this and it gave me the message:
"The partitions on the disk selected for installation are not in the recommended order. For additional information about installing to GPT disks go to the Microsoft website and search for GPT.

"Do you want to proceed with the installation?"

I'm seriously out of my depth guys. Any help would be appreciated.

When doing a fresh install of Windows 10 delete all partitions so you end up with one unallocated space on the drive then select the unallocated space to install.

P.S. when it gets to the countdown stage to reboot that's the time to remove the USB flash drive otherwise it might start the installation process again.

Good news. Excellent. Congrats ... but the secret is now, don't tell anyone you've mastered the re-install process, you'll get bombarded by friends and relatives .. "Could you have a look at my computer ..."

In the future, you can do a hardware test before reinstalling, start the computer and press the ESC key, you will be offered some choices, one is Diagnostics. If all of the hardware is good, then you can proceed with the reinstall.
