" DVD drive that is already region free" i cannot find any!
region free dvd players yes but not an external drive.
that is clearly the best idea!
do they also convert the signal type from uk to us?
    thanks for the great idea
Jeepers. I saw some supposedly region-free drives on amazon.com, but amazon.ca was less accomodating. It's as if they were blocking the "region free" search term.

An alternative: just get an external drive for Region 2, and just use it for those DVDs.

You should be able to get a random drive and switch it to Region 2 in Device Manager, as mentioned in post 8. You can change the region 4 times, after which it is stuck in a region. (I wonder if there's a work-around for that. There should be if it's a setting in the Windows registry, but not if it's something in the drive's firmware.)

If it's in PAL format and your DVD drive is NTSC format it may not be playable.

I don't have any Region 2 DVDs, but i believe that isn't an issue for playing a DVD on a PC. The drive must still support Region 2, for intellectual property reasons.

NTSC/PAL/SECAM is mostly relevant for standalone players with analog outputs.

How to Play PAL Format DVD without Any Restriction?.

It's been a long time since I did anything video related on my computer. I do remember using software that made the player region free. I don't remember the name of it. I'm sure if anyone wanted to find out they could check on videohelp.com.

My ODDs are all set for Region 1 now but can be changed up to 4 times but the last change fixes them at whatever that was.
