Hi. I had an Update a few days ago and since then, whenever I search for a file in Explorer, a message tells me my searches may be slow because indexing is turned off - do you want to turn it on? I click to turn it on but the same message appears with subsequent searches. Does anyone know the cause/cure of this? Thank you. Winver 1909.

What happens if you got to Windows Search settings? Is it set to Enhanced? What does the Indexing Status show?
Try Windows Search Troubleshooter to see if it finds any problems. Search is working fine on my PCs, but I'm using 2004.
From winver command, what version of Windows 10 are you using?
What is the update number from Windows Update history from the few days ago?
Hi, there seem to be 2 or 3 such reports... different builds. Might be related to a NET framework update. E.g.

Hi guys. The full WinVer is 1909 OS Build 18363.1379.
I've switched from Classic to Enhanced and that seems to have done the trick. I also see that I've an Update pending that involves the .Net Framework so that may also be beneficial after I download and install.

Just for information purposes. If you perform a lot of searches, it might be worth using a third-party utility, something like . . .

Thanks for the update and great to hear the issue is resolved. I would leave the computer running until it finishes building the search index - in my case that's about 24 hours if it has to build the index from scratch.
While I depend on and use Windows Search daily, there are times I'm searching for files that are not indexed - in those cases my preferred 3rd party search app is Agent Ransack.
Well now... I've just waited the best part of two hours while Windows 10 20H2 was downloaded and installed along with KB4601556 (cumulative reliability improvements in .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8). I did a search and the original problem is back despite me still being on 'enhanced'. I'll do a rebuild later (no time right now).
Side issue - if I've installed a 'new' OS (20H2), why does calling winver still result in me having 1909 OS Build 18363.1379? Should that not have changed?
If that's what WinVer says then you have not updated to 20H2.

You can update with the ISO using a "Repair install" [also "InPlace upgrade"] procedure.

I suggest you watch the procedure unfolding because I suspect that your previous attempt at 20H2 failed and automatically reverted to the existing version.
