    What exactly is a LIVE CD?

    What is implied by the term LIVE and how would it differ from other boot CDs?

    A live CD is a CD that allows an operating system to be run from a CD drive. A bootable CD is really same thing. It is more marketing than any significant difference.

    Main issue with CDs are they are read only.

    As an example . . .

     Linux Live USB/DVD

    A Linux Live USB/DVD is a good method of retrieving data from an otherwise un-bootable drive or if you are having other drive difficulties.

    Basically . . .

    [1] Download the Linux ISO - I always use Linux Mint although there are others available.
    [2] Create a Bootable USB/DVD [ media ] using Rufus for example => Rufus.
    [3] Boot the media.
    [4] Copy the files from the OS to an external HDD/SSD or USB.

    > Download Linux Mint 20 Ulyana

    I hope this helps.

    To add to what is being said and to make it a little more clear; A Live CD/DVD or USB Flash drive would be bootable and has a slim Operating System on the disc, Usually Linux, because Windows is too large, so you can Try it without installing the OS to your computers Hard Drive. This can be used to browse your Computer to recover data if the computer won't boot.
    A boot CD/DVD or USB is a bootable disc that could be a Rescue disc that has diagnostic apps on it, or more likely, be an Installer, like for Windows10. It usually doesn't have a full OS on it, but will also give you access to your Computer via the command prompt.

    Good explanation for the OP.

    Can't resist adding, a Linux LiveDVD [and some LiveCDs] contains the full install for Linux, has an icon on the Desktop for doing so [had to do one yesterday, NVIDIA video card and its update screwed up, had to remove it]. Also possible to create the LiveUSB from the LiveDVD, just need the downloaded .iso file available on another storage device to use for the Source and use the included Image Writer.
