Why are not file type extensions shown as default

    Hi there

This thing always irritates me beyond measure -- ever since I think Windows 98 after a Windows new install I always have to change the default in file explorer to show the file extensions of known types.

Is there anybody on this forum who doesn't display the file type e.g .exe, .mkv etc etc.
Without showing the extensions you could get some really nasty files !!!!

    Cheers

    jimbo,
It's one of the first things I do too Probably all geeks do the same.

It's probably a safety gate so the masses don't accidentally change the extension, then M$ CS phones would be ringing off the hook when people can't open their files. Makes sense to default it off.
    cheers

    Jimbo,

For the masses, isn't the file type more than sufficient? For the average home user, they may not know what .txt means, but the words "Text Document" are pretty clear.

    jumbo,
Write a geek mode .reg file to take care of this and any other tweaks you have to make every time

Hi jimbo, I have to agree. And the default hidden system files also irritates me.

Rationally speaking though, although it irritates me, I do understand the need to cater to the most common user.
Obviously, there are many users that should never have access to system files, otherwise, Ten Forums would be 5 times busier.

I guess the OP is no longer interested in his thread. No response to anything.
