I always want to see the file extensions. It's a setting that I change.

So you tried a "after a Windows new install" like OP wrote about and confirmed settings didn't change?

@f14tomcat - OP came and left within the last hour

I think that hidden extensions are a hacker's delight.

An emailed file called nude-babe.jpg.exe will save properly.
But windows explorer will show the name as nude-babe.jpg ... which looks innocent, right?
So just click open that nudie picture, right? NO!!!!

I always show full file names with extension.
Yes, it's a pain to enable it on every new computer, so the OP is right.
But ya gotta do what ya gotta do, and that's all.

I have and feel the geek need to have both type and extension visible.

Just in case a hacker has modified the description associated with an extension.

Sorry (kinda almost). If defaulting to show extensions would eradicate misery in the world, I'm all for it. But...... it's much ado about nothing.

Like you said before, "I respectfully disagree and it's nice to have choices" I wanna see the .xyz - I like redundancy in some cases like this.

One comment, the .exe and .cmd files are not associated, they are what runs programs and files [usually created by programs] are associated with them. I also like having full information about a file name showing. And I never ever remove the small arrow on shortcuts as it keeps me from deleting the actual file for running a program.

Sorry it's must me, I don't get it.
The .exe and to some extent .cmd files are what run programs, for example Microsoft Word uses winword.exe, WordPad uses .exe or the old write.exe, they are what other files are associated with like double-clicking a .doc file calls upon winword.exe to open the program. Most times an .exe file in a Program folder will run something or may be called by the main program to run something associated. As I recall .cmd was associated with DOS like a .bat file, tells the computer to do something. Shortcuts/icons call a particular .exe file to open the associated program.
