Mm, what sort of printer, what technology, if cartridges, are they refillable?
E.g. I have an inkjet printer and refill cartridges from bottles.
Printers are typically relatively cheap anyway, then the ink isn't.
How do you wish to connect the printer- are you doing higher volume prints- photos...?
Other ideas- try an 'eco font'; try using an ink-saving program such as GreenPrint

that sounds a better idea, its just for my wife who prints a lot of black and white prints for her work, just a cheap and cheery option really nothing fancy.
I find the refilled cartridge dries out after some weeks of non-use but can be used many times, saving lots of waste.
However refilling is messy (think black fingers if no gloves), and you need to be sure the cartridge permits it (hole in the top).
But, if your wife needs quality prints, ink-saving measures may not be worthwhile.
Trivia: who still makes a printer that uses white ink? Last I used was over 20 years ago called Alps, shop I worked in sold them, they used ink sticks and melted as they were used, great for colored paper.
I'd suggest an inexpensive laser printer. I like Brother because of their driver support for old printers. (Better than HP or Canon, IMHO.) Large capacity toner cartridges are relatively inexpensive, for black and white.
Color laser is another matter. I have one, but don't use it as much as a B&W multifunction device.
Laser printers are also better if you don't use the printers a lot. No print head clogging due to dried ink.
Lasers (cheap ones, at least) are unsuitable for photo printing, if that matters.
I also prefer Brother MFC all in one printers. You can purchase Generic cartridges on Amazon and Ebay, they work flawlessly. Also, their support and driver availability are fantastic.
